My only wish in this miserable life is to be a superfluous man, to squander my family’s wealth on card games and brandy and women of the night, to steel my heart against the social ills of the society which I reject, yes, reject, but not out of any sense of morality nor justice, but out of sheer worship for myself, for the individual! How I wish to languish my days in existential boredom, stretched out on an ottoman with wisps of opium smoke curling above my tired head like ethereal cobras in a trance.

just say you're gay, it's ok.

These days you can't even be genuinely superfluous.

You are a spiritual tranny.

What are the go-to books on the superfluous man?
I've read A Hero of our Time and I bought Oblamov but haven't read it yet
What other ones are essential reading?

The Gambler by Dostoyevsky

Well, the superfluous man originates in Eugene Onegin, so that's essential. Do read Oblomov as well — just like any good book, the beginning will make you laugh and the end will make you cry. I didn't like A Hero of Our Time much, too Romantic for my taste. Ironically, I love Eugene Onegin, but that's because the form elevates an ordinary love story into something spectacular.

Since Eugene Onegin is supposed to have a rhyme to it and is basically poetry, is reading a translation of it a let down?

we've refined prince production system significantly since the days of de quincy and wilde. they were early prototypes.

as for you op...good luck. if you're smart, handsome, and have the wit for it you can find a good colonial post.

Why not?
I mean obviously you need to be rich but assuming you have money, why not?

Bazorov of Fathers and Sons is something of a superfluous man, it is an incredible novel anyway, so give it a read.
