Does Stephen R. Donaldson actually hate high fantasy?
>Hey Thomas, how's it going>LEPER OUTCAST UNCLEAN>Me and the boys are going out for some beers, you wanna...>DON'T TOUCH ME AAAAAAAAAAH
Would a modern American city really react like medieval peasants to a guy with leprosy?
>>24771273Americans react like medieval peasants to just about everything.
>>24770314What I don't understand is why he still thinks he's a leper when he clearly is cured. It's just unrealistic how much of a douchebag he acts like. The whole thing feels like somebody made Donaldson read the lord of the rings and he hated the concept of middle earth so much he created thomas covenant just to piss on it.
>>24772030>still thinks he's a leper when he clearly is cured.Thomas believes it's a dream due to his self loathing nature, also his leprosy has ruined his life. Each successive book goes into how that is at the start.>hated the concept of middle earth so much I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion. The Lands are beautiful, the people in it are good. You are meant to actually like them and root for their survival against overpowering despite. And they serve to act as a foil to Thomas. Also at the end of the day its dark fantasy.
>>24772037>And they serve to act as a foil to Thomas. All they do is tell him to do something and he does the opposite and then moans about what he did for the rest of the book and they forgive him every time which means there's no tension.
>>24773059They're good, competent people. That's the point. The Lands is a beautiful place, full of good people. You're meant to like them and think the place is worth protecting. The book would be very annoying if everyone in it was actually like Thomas.>forgive him every time which means there's no tension.Follow up in book 2 and 3, where Thomas's actions start to catch up with him then.
