As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.>Why write web novels?Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Do "serious" attempts at literature do well on RR? I'm not talking about mimicking crime and punishment, but more like Stephen king. I want to get into writing but I don't really enjoy what is typically the theme in web novels
>>24770312"Serious" attempts usually translates to dry and cumbersome, and they don't do well, for obvious reasons.
>>24770312Depends on what you mean by serious. Princess of the Void is a straight up sci-fi romance with extremely graphic sex that's doing quite well.
>>24770312Think of it as opening a hotdog stand in front of the Stadium. People aren't coming for your hotdogs but you can still make some sales while never being the main attraction.

>>24770237Anyone read Pact and/or Pale by Wildbow? I like the magic system, where it is more like an art then a science, and the fact it is like a whole bunch of magical traditions all interacting with eachother, instead of the hard magic systems that seem to be so popular. It has a good balance.
>>24770342I tried and it sucked. Pacing is glacial, nothing happens, and none of the characters are particularly interesting. I can't even remember what the actual plot WAS, beyond the protagonist inheriting a magic house and someone trying to take it away from him.
>>24770342Is this a bait?
>>24770353Interesting, one of the major criticisms I typically hear for Pact is that it moves too fast, not enough breaks.
Anime or realistic cover?
>>24770437A cover that describes the tone and style of your story???

>>24770367did somebody say multiple magic systems?>373,736 antimagic particles suddenly appeared out of nowhere and downloaded a gigabyte of alpha/beta/omega fanfic to anon's computerseriously why are they named like that
Taking suggestion for mandatory /wng/ reading, for now I got:>WesternMother of LearningShadow SlaveWorm/Parahuman series>JapaneseMushoku TenseiKumo Desu ga, Nanika?Infinite Dendrogram>ChineseLord of the MysteriesReverend InsanityRelease That Witch>KoreanReincarnatorThe Novel ExtraOmniscient Reader's Viewpoint
>>24770565the other three mogs the western one so hard it's not even funny
>>24770565Gonna be real with you man this isn't like the classics where there's been centuries of smart people figuring out the minimal amount a person needs to read to be considered well-read.You need to 10x all those numbers MINIMUM to be able to speak with ANY kind of authority on weblit, and even then every other convo you're going to get hit with "pfft, you haven't even read X, you don't know shit."For western add BTDEM, Azarinth Healer, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and Beware of Chicken for the big ones. For Japanese you'll need to add SAO, Ascendance of a Bookworm, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slim, KonoSuba, Re:Zero, Overlord, and Eminence in Shadow. And not weblit, but you need to read the grand-daddy A Certain Magical Index which is hugely influential. And if you open that can of worms, you need to read the Haruhi Suzumiya books and imo should read Spice & Wolf. Then there's Log Horizon, Accel World, Arifureta, everything Funa wrote, and you start to drift into influential manga...Chinese and Korean I refuse to speak on because I haven't read shit there and don't intend to.Now, does all that above sound like fun or a chore? It's a chore. Just read what you like. Unless what's above sounds like fun, just accept that the field is busted wide open and huge and it's beyond what a reasonable, average person can read and understand and synthesize in a lifetime.
>>24770565Is your goal to gather the most horrible written garbage in the world?
>>24770565>Shadow Slavethought this was chineseand mainly popular on reddit. ive barely seen any wng posters mention it. also replace dendrogram with Overlordkinoand add FFF-Class 'Unlucky Antagonist' [Villain's origin story] [Massive Worldbuilding] to the listI guess I should try reading release that witch, I've heard of it a few times.
>>24770603If FUNA could stop writing 4/5 sentences as filler content, it would actually be peak.
>>24770618This is just another way of saying she's a peak example of a weblit author. You may not like it but wordcount padding IS peak performance.
a poem i'm trying to curate in my wn:"What does our nation becomewhen we support our fathers, but a land of only sons? No––Let us give only to our sonsin hopes they found a fatherland.whether we are willed nothing but the whet of lifeor dulled from being willed everything but life––Whether born as if bequeathed, known by our parents in the womb;or bequeathed as if born,a surprise even to ourselveswe must sacrifice it all for our children, entrusting them to youas we bequeath our deaths to them. For what makes a great son,but making fathers grand––And what other way but blood?Let my sister become great by helping you––but me, let me help by being great."https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/128737
>>24770633Calm down Rudyard Kipling
>>24770610lol he missed this one, it doesn’t even have reviews yet on webnovel…

I OFFICIALLY HAVE 50 FRIENDS FOR THE WORLD'S END.
>>24770570if only the translations didn't make me want to gouge my eyes out. completely unreadable unless you literally only read trash, any standards at all makes eastern slop miserable to read sentence by sentence. and somehow the dialogue is worse
>>24770762>ohhh but the graphics are so bad
>>24770836a much more accurate comparison would be>ohhh but its laggy and filled with bugs
>>24770839nobody who reads gives a shit about prose pal
Characters > Memorable Moments that release dopamine/activate almonds/etc = Story >>>> Prose
>>24770842most people who read give a shit about prose palmake no mistake, standards low enough to suffer through even english web sloppa is rare for readers at large. eastern sloptards are a breed below even that. you're in a niche internet bubble, and you not recognizing that is just kinda proving how low iq you are
>>24770851these works are meant for people for whom reading is more than just an exercise in pseudointellectual vanitygo back to /wg/ and jerk off over prose as much as you like with the other noreads
>>24770853>these works are meant for people for whom reading is more than just an exercise in pseudointellectual vanityeven twilight and 50 shades has markedly better prose than all eastern web shit, and the vast majority of western web shit. most readers do have basic standards, however low they are, and translated chinese xianxia do not meet them. it takes a genuinely lobotomized retard to read that crap
>>24770853holy BTFO
Prose only needs to be passable. Serviceable. Just look at Brando Sando (PBUH)
>>24770872yeah and web novel prose is not passable for regular readers. this shit is a SPED niche and you tards think it's representative of what 'readers' as a whole think
>>24770860>and the vast majority of western web shit. Can you give some examples of western web novel slop with decent pose? Honest question.
>>24770874By readers everyone is talking about the web novel space. It's not like anybody here is likely to get trad pubbed. The RR-Patreon-KU pipeline is already a dream for most.
>>24770874oh no, not the regular noreaders!
We love prose and traditional literature here
I will now read your webslop.
>>24770849>Memorable Moments that release dopamine/activate almonds/etcthis is crucial and i need to learn how to do this better especially in the age of "absolute cinema" "aura farming" "hype merchant" etc
today i will remind them
what matters most is how big the girl's tits are
>>24770907The mc illustration in this is kinda cute...do i want to read this...?
one day, there will be labubus of my web novel's characters...
>>24770565I don't know if it should be mandatory, but Black Iron's Glory/Tales of the Reincarnated Lord executes the basic concept of Release That Witch better.
>>24770874>web novel prose is not passable for regular readers.Have you even picked up a single modern trad book? You think Sanderson's prose is leagues above a high quality web novel?
>>24770881>It's not like anybody here is likely to get trad pubbed.Anons pushing you to get trad pubbed are inherently dishonest. Trad pubbing nowadays is a dead end, you won't get any push by the publisher. At most you're getting an Instagram post with 20 likes. And then you'll be back doing what a web novel author does, finding ways to advertise it online.
>>24770986yes. by a lot.
>>24770312>serious attempts at literature>kingslop
>>24770986>above a high quality web novel?wait wtf, no, its about on par with the best ones. nice retarded clarifier that misses the entire point
>>24771008>its about on par with the best ones. And Sanderson is the biggest name in the industry at the moment. Same as authors like Sarah J Maas. Prose does not matter to the average reader, sorry to break it to you.
Why do so many Korean stories include a little girl that acts like the MC's daughter(or in some cases, is his actual daughter)?I'm assuming, like most slop things, one popular story did it and the rest copied it.
>>24771016are you retarded? thats the point. you need Sanderson level prose as the low bar and only the very very best western web novels meet that. no eastern web novels dowhat the fuck do you think people are even talking about right now. fucking web novel readers man
Still no actual examples of what's good or bad
>>24771073>no eastern web novels doThey're fine. The problem with them is that the translations are by and large bad.MTL would make even Beowulf read like shit. >what the fuck do you think people are even talking about right now. You absolute fucking retard, most of the "conversation" is shitting on western web novels and stating that readers care about prose./Wg/ is actually subhuman.
>>24771024Lolis for manga/anime adaptions. Even harem ones like Heroines are Trying to Kill Me has several token ones outside the MCs harem.
>>24771095yeah so many works have a fanartbait poster loli
