Do "serious" attempts at literature do well on RR? I'm not talking about mimicking crime and punishment, but more like Stephen king. I want to get into writing but I don't really enjoy what is typically the theme in web novels

Anyone read Pact and/or Pale by Wildbow? I like the magic system, where it is more like an art then a science, and the fact it is like a whole bunch of magical traditions all interacting with eachother, instead of the hard magic systems that seem to be so popular. It has a good balance.

I tried and it sucked. Pacing is glacial, nothing happens, and none of the characters are particularly interesting. I can't even remember what the actual plot WAS, beyond the protagonist inheriting a magic house and someone trying to take it away from him.

Gonna be real with you man this isn't like the classics where there's been centuries of smart people figuring out the minimal amount a person needs to read to be considered well-read.
You need to 10x all those numbers MINIMUM to be able to speak with ANY kind of authority on weblit, and even then every other convo you're going to get hit with "pfft, you haven't even read X, you don't know shit."
For western add BTDEM, Azarinth Healer, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and Beware of Chicken for the big ones.
For Japanese you'll need to add SAO, Ascendance of a Bookworm, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slim, KonoSuba, Re:Zero, Overlord, and Eminence in Shadow. And not weblit, but you need to read the grand-daddy A Certain Magical Index which is hugely influential. And if you open that can of worms, you need to read the Haruhi Suzumiya books and imo should read Spice & Wolf. Then there's Log Horizon, Accel World, Arifureta, everything Funa wrote, and you start to drift into influential manga...
Chinese and Korean I refuse to speak on because I haven't read shit there and don't intend to.

Now, does all that above sound like fun or a chore?
It's a chore. Just read what you like. Unless what's above sounds like fun, just accept that the field is busted wide open and huge and it's beyond what a reasonable, average person can read and understand and synthesize in a lifetime.
