So much of the West is built on Jewish foundations. Christianity itself was born out of Judaism and carried with it the Jewish scriptures, the moral law, the prophetic demand for justice, and the covenantal sense of obligation that later informed Western law and politics. The Jewish idea of history moving forward with purpose rather than circling endlessly underlies the very notion of progress that defines modern science and society. Jewish influence also runs through the rise of capitalism via credit and finance, through philosophy and rationalism with Spinoza, through modern science with Einstein, Freud, and countless others, and through culture from the Bible to Hollywood. The West as it exists is unimaginable without Jewish thought and labor woven into its core.By contrast, the pre Christian Greeks belonged to a very different world, one that shared far more with the East. Their view of the cosmos was cyclical, their gods mirrored the capricious and sensual deities of Mesopotamia and India, and their philosophy sought balance, harmony, and eternal patterns rather than a divine plan unfolding in time. Their mysteries echoed Egyptian and Persian rites, and much of their science and mathematics built on Babylonian and Egyptian foundations. The Greece that later Europe claimed as its ancestor was never truly “Western” in the Christian or modern sense but part of a wider eastern Mediterranean and Asian world of myth and thought. If the West was laid on Jewish foundations, the Greeks stood closer to India, Persia, and Egypt, and only later were they reinterpreted and absorbed into a civilization that made them something else entirely.
