Where do I go from here?
>>24773024Someone else? Her other books suck compared to that one. Try the opposite of dark academia, Lucky Jim.
>>24773024I love the Goldfinch and The Little Friend is worth reading if you really like her style. Bret Easton Ellis' The Shards weirdly captures her same immersive feel despite being very different, and much gayer, subject matter. You just sort of sink into it.
>>24773024what about reading the classics instead of reading about people reading the classics?
I read some of the goldfinch but got bored.Try The Rules of Attraction, The Shards, and Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. And The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Michael Chabon.
>>24773030Lucky Jim feels both dated and still relevant. The writer would also probably hate every person in Secret History. It's like the working class perspective of university.
>>24773086Sell me on this. I looked it up and it seems a bit stereotypical. A bunch of people in NYC trying to be famous, but oh no rent is expensive.
>>24773126You cant understand ellis and mcinerary and even tart without factoring in janowitz
>>24773024Read this instead
>>24773024>Dionysiaca, Nonnus>Ovid Metamorphoses>Golden Ass, Apuleius>The Road to Eleusis, Carl Ruck>The Chemical Muse, Ammon Hillman>Philosophy as Rite of Rebirth, Algis Uzdavinys >Birth of Tragedy, Preplatonics Lecture,s Friedrich Nietzsche>Michelangelo and the Reinvention of the Human Body, James Hall>Augustus, Williams>Rules of Attraction, Ellis (practically same characters and setting, could be happening somewhere else on campus)>>24773037>The ShardsThe gang-stalking and aspiring writer's unreliable narration (on top of drug use) comes out better than the police investigation in Secret History, which stretches credulity.
>>24773060this
>>24773060Now why would I do that?
>>24773232bret was such a qt lil mo
The epilogue ruined it for me.
>>24773024The Goldfinch, a lovely book even if it could have been trimmed by 150 pages. Her prose leaves me breathless.
>>24773488How so?
>>24773060It's what we call an "instant classic"
