Most people encountered in most people's lives could be substituted for some common inanimate object radiating an otherwise human trait, never actually acting in a substantial way. Awkward chair, mysterious shelf, smothering table, warming oven, judgmental glass. This is very silly and seems meaningless as something to judge by.

So in that sense it’s true and there should be more lamps and less women. Maybe a trusty dog companion would add more to the story. Background characters are just decoration. It’s mysteriously somehow different with women, as they expect to be foreground characters in every story. There’s no social movement for making expository characters more developed, or people crying for more depth being added to road bump henchmen or store owners and bartenders. Being utilitarian wallpaper is alright for men I suppose.
