I believe it was a sequel to BOTNS

contractual obligation for another botns book. despite this, the second half is pretty great.

The entire book was better than any of Long Sun.

i disagree. nightside is a fantastic all the way through. i don't remember anything wrong with lake either other than auk and chenille's jaunt up the mountain being a little over the top, but you realize why once you finish the series.

There wasn't anything in particular wrong with Long Sun, but it's among the weakest of Wolfe's works and would have benefited from being abridged to the length of three books, if not two. Urth might be the weakest installment in the New Sun series, but that still puts it on the upper half of Wolfe's work.

if you're looking at all of wolfe's work, there's no way long sun is near the bottom. it's comfortably mid as a series, with nightside being very, very good. you also can't really read short sun with out it, and short sun is wolfe at his absolute best so i would give long sun a similar courtesy.

Short Sun is easily Wolfe's best work, but the only particular value to Long Sun is that it's necessary to really understand Short Sun. I'm glad I read Long Sun, but I've read Short Sun three times now and I have no interest in giving Long Sun a second read. I'd sooner read Short Sun again, or New Sun, or Latro (Arete isn't that good, but it's one book and not four), or Wizard Knight, or Borrowed Man (but not Interlibrary Loan). Wolfe has worse books, (the two already mentioned, There Are Doors, probably a couple of others that aren't coming to mind right now), but he's got too many excellent books to bother rereading a long and mediocre series.

I'm not about to silently put up with this Long Sun slander. Long Sun shines as a political epic in a way that you just don't get in New Sun/Short Sun. It's a necessary and enjoyable part of the series and without it we wouldn't have Silk.

I started his Wizard Knight stuff and was immediately filtered. Am I retarded?
