I would to heaven that I never published. Now, my name is forever marred by the literary excrement I have loosed upon the world.

>>24777470Yes, the publisher knows you by your real identity but publicly uses your pseudonym and you basically just have to hope they don't leak shit. It's probably possible to set something up completely anonymously but the publishers would likely refuse you

>>24777470> is it literally as simple as make one up and no publisher doxxes you? That's the easiest way to do it, and #4 way in terms of total privacy. You are dependent on the publisher, your agent and anyone else involved not releasing that information, intentionally or unintentionally and there are circumstances where they could be forced to disclose it. #1 The most privacy possible is in publishing completely anonymously. Most publishers aren't going to go for that, so you'll have to do it yourself or online. You can't collect any royalties or enforce copyright without disclosing your identity to some party. #2. The next best thing is creating a living trust to register an LLC, then using the LLC to register a fictious business name which will be your pen name, then registering a copyright and maybe a trademark. If you do everything right, the only parties that will know your personal identity are the IRS, your bank, and potentially legal counsel. Your personal name and pen name won't be connected in any public record. The only way it could get exposed is in court records under narrow circumstances if you get sued for some reason. Your publisher doesn't need your personal identity, and in most cases they won't care, contrary to what >>24779340 said.#3 The next best thing is registering an LLC in one of four states that allow anonymous LLCs. You won't need a trust in that case, everything else stays the same. The tradeoff is that the state will also have your personal information connected to the LLC, but that information won't be public. #4 as above.#5 Using just a regular LLC and DBA. Your identity will be connected to the LLC in public records. #6 Just a DBA. Your name will appear next to your pen name in a local newspaper for a month and be connected to the DBA in public records.>>24779354You know full and well that Stephen King published under Richard Bachman. There's plenty of reasons to publish under a pen name that have nothing to do with "balls".
>>24779516Never heard of this, sounds very US-specific. People actually go through all that with trusts and LLCs?
>>24779177 it’s by far the most famous section.
>>24779642This is specific to the US. The UK have legal and business entities that are more or less equivalent, lifetime trusts and LTDs. LTDs are exposed to corporate taxes and so aren't as beneficial as LLCs which are pass-through. I can't speak to how it would work in other countries exactly, but I'm sure there are similar things in most countries in the west. You don't necessarily have to be a US citizen or resident to have a trust or LLC in the US. If you lived in some place that wasn't very privacy friendly that might be worth considering.>People actually go through all that with trusts and LLCs?The vast majority of people will just trust their publisher or platform and tell them they're writing under a pen name to get paid to their personal account and identity directly. It's much simpler and usually enough to defeat casual, public investigation. But, to be fair, the vast majority of people that publish aren't going anywhere with it and aren't publishing anything really sensitive, etc., so it's not worth the trouble in those majority cases. If you were a best seller or big franchise author, writing something really controversial, juggling brands or different identities, or just concerned with privacy, you would probably have it set up in this way or very similar, maybe with an S-Corp or C-Corp instead of an LLC for different reasons. There's other benefits as well with simplifying taxes, inheritance, liability, etc.
