A PKD-esque novella about an android homicide detective. He is initially programmed to not have emotions, but soon gets enrolled by his local PD into a classified, nation wide beta test where he gets a firmware update that allows him to experience emotions. This is done in the hope that it will allow androids working as detectives to draw connections they wouldn't otherwise be able to make as to help solve cases. Instead the android detective is overwhelmed by the horror of human experience as he goes about his work. Not fully understanding how suffering works, he thinks there is a limited supply given out, much like he receives a supply of electricity everyday to keep functioning as an android. In a messianic fit of naivete he somehow ends up programming himself to receive incompressible amounts of pain hoping it will divert all the suffering away from humanity. Living in a hell of his own creation where he experiences infinite amounts of suffering, he simultaneously feels an infinite amount of bliss, under the deluded knowledge that he permanently absolved humanity of suffering.
