>you have to go to school for 12 years to learn how to read books and understand books the way your teachers tell you and then go to a university for 12 more years to learn how to read books the actual right way and understand books the way your liberal professors tell you and do your doctoral thesis on the right way to read books and understand books how they taught you and only then can you start thinking about writing a book but never actually do it
reading is for losers
not my problem

shitting without eating is one of the most enlightened abilities

>you can't write if you don't read
yep there it is
gotta make artificial rules to feel better about yourself for wasting your time reading
you're not a serious person

>agree with op
>this sends op into defense mode for some reason
>>
>>24778691
You can really tell that op doesn't read
>>
>>24778659
>books are shit
>>
>>24778399
You don't actually have to do any of that though, if you are intelligent.

While I think if you're rich and can afford an MFA or get one for free that's pretty sick, yeah, in this internet age, it's absolutely not required. It's funny, 99% of the time when I tell people I'm an aspiring writer, their first reply is "oh where'd you go to college?" before the even more awkward "so what do you write?"
>Uh, y'know... literary fiction...
>What does that mean?
ahhhHHHHHhhh
>>
>>24779270
yeah i'm not gay

>>24779308
that's what i'm saying
>>
>>24779347
Who are you talking to who doesn't know what literary fiction is? I believe this story is fake and gay
>>
>>24779440
People who don't actively read have no clue what 'literary fiction' entails, aka most random people you meet in public and most of my family friends.
>It means... y'know, serious stories, uh, about life and stuff?
there's no good answer. It's like they expect me to say sci-fi/fantasy or romance.

The eating part of this metaphor involves having real world experiences worth writing about, as well as a talent for writing, which isn't something you learn.
Going through the school system with the intention of writing is more akin to stretching out your asshole before shitting, to make sure "it comes out right". You don't need.

You don't have to go to school or read books a certain way, or read any specific books. However, if you never read, you will never understand what a piece of text is, and therefore will never be able to write anything more than your own name. The more you read, the more you will learn about literature, and therefore the better you will be equiped when you go to write.

Don't get me wrong, It would certainly be an interesting experiment to see the works of a person who's only experience with the written word is chan posts and the back of a tendies box, but I doubt that piece would be very impressive or interesting beyond that novelty.

Yet another example of the downfall of /lit/. The retards have fully taken over the culture and replaced it. R.I.P.
>>
>>24778399
It really explains the state of present culture that writers and writing teams are stacked with highly educated nepo babies who cannot write anything of value.
Writing isn't about reading. Writing is about living, and can't have lived if you've only ever been safe and secure.
>>
>>24778680
Let's see some of your writing then. Also why the fuck would you write a book if you don't even like reading?

People miss out the important part when stating, 'to learn how to write you need to read.' You can blinding read 100 books and not learn a thing.
The important part is analysing how others approached the problems of writing, how do they use and construct sentences, how does it differ and which approaches do you like over others. How can you do this if you don't even know what parts make up a sentence or paragraph.
You don't need years and years studying, just read books like picrel and do some practice.

>Teachers teach how to write
>99% of them have never even written a first draft
>Authors bash teachers writing lessons all the time
It's true, those that can't do, teach.
>>
It's highly unlikely you'll write anything good if you don't read. It's very much possible, but at least stylistically you're almost bound to be intolerable

>Bronze Age Mindset - Bronze Pervert
That book you talk about exists and it's this one. If you could gather a pile of shit the size of a skyscraper and compress it into a book that would be it. Until I bought it I always thought money spent on a book, ANY book, was money well spent. Now I wish I had spent it on a horse sized dildo from aliexpress and fucked my own ass with it because it would have been less painful than trying to read something so retarded.

I know that the idea of education just being a wagie training institution is regurgitated by half-baked stoner drop outs and reddit pseuds, but it's absolutely true. The powers that be or whatever you want to call them, have no use for a well versed writer, unless they can write demotivational, anti-value propaganda for their media machine
