How the fuck do you read Vineland, claim that you love the book dearly, and then miss the point so hard that you turn it into an action movie about noble freedom fighters Resistā„¢ing ICE?
>>
>>24780647
pynchon approved, chud.
>>
Isn't it funny how Leonard's character is like totally irrelevant in regards to anything that happens in this film?

I actually thought it was entertaining, but every character was extremely unlikable, except maybe the daughter and the sensei, despite his far left politics.

The whole thing was absurd. African American revolutionaries in the 21st century? Lol. The WASP club? Lol. It's too much of a clownshow to even get upset at if you're a right wing ideologe
>>
>>24780647
You didn't get the movie (and I doubt you read the book).
>>
>>24780681
Explain it to us. Not being snarky, I'm curious. What message was the film supposed to impart?
>>
>>24780681
I did read the book. I adore Pynchon and although it was the weakest I've read from him, that still doesn't make for a bad book. I would even call myself a fan of PTA because I enjoyed Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and TWBB.
The movie has essentially nothing to do with the book aside from the surface level love triangle and questionable daughter with a loser dad. It fails to do anything interesting. Absolutely nothing thematically makes it through the adaptation, I couldn't tell you a single question raised by the film. It is bland and generic in a way Ruggles could never be.
I wouldn't be surprised if part of the writing was done by AI. The bizarre Christmas Adventure shit in particular seems like he read a first draft, said "increase Pynchonian quirkiness by 30% and uhhh I think contractually he requires a conspiracy," and tacked that on.
>>
>>24780647
Pynchon is a raging libtard tho
>>
>>24780744
Not at all. He's more anarchist/communist.
>>
>>24780744
He's too much of a political doomer for that. There's no way somebody with such thorough analyses of the post-war nets of control built around westerners then made it through the Bush and Obama years with a shred of hope left for democracy when he was already advocating "preterition" decades earlier.
You think he trusts conservatives selling the country to Palantir or liberals trying to lionize the FBI? I'm surprised the Epstein saga hasn't made his head physically explode already.
>Captcha: Gravity's Rainbow World War Two
What the fuck
>>
>>24780686
rarely does some contrarian on lit have anything to back up their vitriolic claims, anon, you're wasting your breath
>>
>>24780647
>ICE still around

THANKS OBAMA
>>
>>24780647
God this movie sucked
>>
For me, the meat of the book was about the campus revolution being betrayed by the leader who gets turned by the feds. This whole angle was completely dropped in favor of the father/daughter plot which is the weakest storyline, and on top of that completely excising the wacky ninja stuff. It's like if Peter Jackson took the Hobbits out of LotR entirely and it was just Aragorn raising an army.
>>
>>24780686
PTAs said he doesnt really go about making a film with a 'message' in mind. he makes the characters then scripts out how he thinks theyd navigate the plot
>>
>>24780681
>You didn't get the movie
The movie doesn't get itself. It's supposed to be Vineland transposed into the present but right off the bat you have the fucking Symbionese Liberation Army as the heroes so what's the point of not making it a period piece?
>>
>>24780681
I do, leftypol retard. Pynchon is right-wing no matter what your NYC dime square hipster friends think. PTA missed the forest AND the trees.
>>
>>24781574
>completely excising the wacky ninja stuff.
the skateboarders are supposed to be these
>>
>>24781613
>Pynchon is right-wing
lmao he's a hippie.
>>
PTA needs to stop adapting Pynchon, especially if he’s not even gonna adapt his good novels. You aren’t a genius just because you adapt a geniuses work. Nolan and all these guys are so cringe. Just accept you aren’t gonna be a physicist or great writer and just do your own thing. At least Lubezki made his own film instead of adapting Blood Meridian.

This whole film is literally even more cringe when you realize it’s a PTA self insert on how his woke black/jewish Kamala playing wife has taught him all this new stuff about lefty politics.
>>
You guys misunderstand the goal of adapting Pynchon's and other such books. It's specifically to create an adaptation that is not faithful and that overshadows these books. It's gatekeeping.
>>
>>24780647
That movie was good. Never read the book. And I never will.
>>
>>24781583
Makes sense, Inherent Vice is one of my favorites of his despite whatever plot fuckery which is better just ignored because the vibes are top tier. Similarly I wonā€˜t be seeing OBAA because the vibes feel fake and gay.
>>
>>24780773
That's even worse. Is he retarded?
>>
Pynchon can be a great author in a chuddy canon exactly because he's such an embarrassing hippie dinosaur. His entire oeuvre is about this hippie retard almost managing to grasp the real issues of his age but never quite managing to hold onto them due to his ideological handicap, then just doubling and tripling and quadrupling down every time he is faced with a similar situation or when he watches his own sand castles crumble before his eyes. It's like the cosmos made him a lefty just so that it could troll him as hard and as often as possible.
>>
>>24780655
The most reclusive man with no contact with the media approved it
>>
>>24781937
He meets with PTA lol not exactly a secret

>>

According to PTA the work of PTA is approved
>>
>>24780786
>You think he trusts conservatives selling the country to Palantir
Why do people genuinely believe this?
>>
>>24780681
if you have to read the book it's loosely based on for it to make sense, it means it's a shitty movie
>>
>>24782695
Those ā€œpeopleā€ are inevitably tranny or tranny-adjacent
>>
OBAA isn’t an adaptation of Vineland retards. It’s loosely inspired by it. It’s misleading to say he ā€œtook outā€ aspects of the book in the same way that actual adaptations often remove/condense certain themes, characters, subplots, etc. You can think the film is shit if you want but don’t scratch your head going duhhh why is it so different from the book when everything from the title to the credits to the press make it very clear it is not and never was meant to be an adaptation.

This meme usually pertains to somebody calling thread participants a tranny. That anon saying a particular tech-centric component of neoliberalism is saturated around the trannysphere seems reasonable and astute.
>>
>>24782863
No, I'm not a masochist. Couldn't pay me to read Pynchon. The Crying Lot was painful enough.
>>
>>24782977
What DO you like to read?
>>

Hungry Hungry Caterpilllar
>>
>>24782978
You want I should list off all my favorites so you can judge my taste to invalidate my opinion on Pynchon in order to feel better that some random doesn't care for a writer that you like or something?

I'm currently reading Yerofeyev's Moscow to the End of the Line, before that I read Lewis' Ransom Trilogy, and prior to that I read Jack Black's autobiography "You Can't Win"

He’s not reclusive, he just avoids the media and is acquaintances with PTA. It’s not like Pynchon is a hermit misanthrope that hates everything, he’s not Sallinger.

I bet you donā€˜t have any cows at all
