He was making 1000 pounds (this is around 400-500K dollars in modern terms) a year by the time he was in his mid 40s JUST from book sales. He also got paid huge amounts of money for his stints in diplomatic missions and his stay in Paris at the French embassy.
He says he saved up a ton of this money because he was living frugally but in his 50s he finally got tired of this and wanted to see what it's like to live it up and truly enjoy his newfound fame.

damn the classic "philosopher is unappreciated in his time, then gets randomly surge of popularity later in his life past his time" except for bergson, its the complete inverse there.

His philosophy books were not actually exceptionally popular during his life (Kant picking them up is what really caused that immense surge), even though they were what he was most passionate about. His money and popularity mostly came from his books on English history, even the French greeted him as "Hume the great historian" rather than philosopher.

damn. sad.
>(Kant picking them up is what really caused that immense surge)
was Kant really that popular and influential back then? I thought his first edition of the critique was poorly received and thats partly why he made the prologomena and the 2nd edition.

Well not immediately but throughout the 1800s. Kant got Schopenhauer, Fichte, Hegel analysing Hume and he became seminal in German academic circles, which also caused a resurgence of interest in his philosophical works back in Britain.
Iirc Darwin actually credited Hume as one of the main inspirations for his theory of evolution.

Ah, back when Scientists werent allergic to philosophy and actually had the humility to credit Philosophers for anything.
