What is /lit/‘s opinion on Brandon Sanderson?I started Mistborn a few weeks ago, read through all of that trilogy, Warbreaker, and now am on Way of Kings. The prose is far from literary mastery but I’ve been enjoying it not having read fantasy in a decade. He seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to endings.
he's overrated and overhated at the same time
mormons make the best authors
oh great another bait thread
slop
>>24782268I wish I liked his writing, it would be nice to follow the career of an author that actually puts effort into updating his readers on his progress. I just think his books are very boring.
it starts with an R and ends with a t.
>>24782280I can definitely see how you come to that opinion. I think it was purely not having read any fantasy in 10-15 years that allowed me to immediately get sucked into his world building, which is one of his strengths. The prose is weak and I kind of get to just turn off my brain and consume the story which is nice. Similar to people who watch reality TV I’d guess. And he has a million books so it’s nice I have something like this read for the next year or so
Never read him, partially because of some hipsterism in my bones that I can't shake which whispers popular thing bad but I think I give many other popular things a chance, I just can't give him a chance simply due to how many books he churns out I can't think of any possible justification for anyone writing so many books, he can't have that many interesting things to say so I have to assume he writes a lot of slop that isn't refined enough and doesn't respect my time. Due to his popularity though I know he must have some value so I respect him, I just have enough other things I want to read, why disregard my intuition?
>>24782268I'm not that big on fantasy. Is their a sci-fi equivalent to Brandon Sanderson? Perhaps some kind of grand space opera story recorded in massive tomes?
>>24782406James SA Corey, probably. They shit out a new sloppa practically every single year.
>>24782281Rothfuss was a faggot?
>>24782268Only deep thinkers who appreciate worldbuilding can enjoy him
>>24782406Legend of the galactic heroes - 10 books totaling about 2600-2800 pages.
>>24782281retardet?
>>24783192He's definitely the sort of author for people who prioritize thorough "worldbuilding" over plot or prose style (not meant as an insult I promise).
>>24783476>I wasn’t talking to you
Factory belt writer.
>>24782268The man himself? A class act, guy is successful but not full of it and clearly actually wants others to succeed as well, he puts out his method out there for free instead doing some kind of grift where he writes self help books for struggling writers. Only controversial part of his career is the elephant in the room - mormonism - which could be worse. The books? They're alright, his books are almsot a reaction to literature being more focused on wordplay and clever phrasing or allegory than what is literally happening and the scenes you picture in your head. If you've ever read some bullshit like finnigan's wake, he's almost the exact opposite, in a good way. You may not like it but it's his style and the style is well suited for describing what the plot is and the necessary context to picture a scene, basically nothing more. He's like a writer that grew up watching TV instead of reading, again, in a good way. His books are pretty big but instead of pointless fuff, they're all plot plot plot, and this is very satisfying because unlike some well known hacks (GRRM) he actually plans out his books first and writes them afterward, so if he sets up a mistery he does in fact know what the reveal will be, and similar things can be said for every plot thread, often times plot threads get resolved all together at the very end, creating a satisfying and (almost? I can't think of an exception) always positive ending. Again, these books are like episodes of a comfy TV show, they won't change your life or make you reflect really but they're fun. A lot of the praise may sound really basic but if you've read some bullshit like Inherent Vice or even books by GRRM you'll know what i'm talking about, scenes where the writer is just so in love with his prose he keeps going about shit that never comes up again and doesn't move the story along in any way... Compare him to Robert Jordan, he comes from that looking like a paragon of literature. It shouldn't be high praise to say "all the plot threads get neatly tied up" but when looking at what's popular AND recommended, it really is.
>>24782443>they
>>24782406You might like red rising… maybe 40k stuff (try dan abnett)
i was really enjoying the way of kings— mainly for the worldbuilding. but the pacing/direction of book 3 (and the start of 4) killed it for me. if it’s all i had to read I wouldn’t be miserable, but for now it’s on indefinite hold
>>24783589Leave it that way, it gets worse.
>>24782272Are there any that write westerns?
>>24782268Decent guy. I like the general ideas behind his books, though his prose is cringe. I'd like his books more of they had a better editor
>>24782268>No rocking tiddies 3/10 would not doink
>>24782268Fat.
