It’s very rare for a genius to discover, as well as have the resources to enable such a discovery, something entirely new like general relativity and that means that for the rest of us it’s just carrying the standard of your field of choice. There were even plenty of geniuses in 20th century Europe who shoveled coal all day because they were born in a tenement in Manchester instead of an apartment in Paris. It’s a dull and miserable existence where hardly anyone is ever capable of meeting you where you are intellectually. You constantly have to mentally stoop to people and what’s worse is that it worms its way into you unless you’re careful about it. Having to live our lives surrounded by people who play cards for fun, who watch South Park for amusement. I don’t know what’s worse, the solitude or the sense of degradation when we surrender and spend time in company. Great literature is like the only escape, the only way to feel that someone else in the world understands and relates to us.
