A genius is in a perpetual state of wonderment.

As it turns out he was wrong. FTL travel is possible. Quantum physics is the path.

That einsteins name? Albert einstein

Actually most of the time it’s boredom with a dull undertone of borderline physical pain at having to deal with idiots all day. It’s very rare for a genius to discover, as well as have the resources to enable such a discovery, something entirely new like general relativity and that means that for the rest of us it’s just carrying the standard of your field of choice. There were even plenty of geniuses in 20th century Europe who shoveled coal all day because they were born in a tenement in Manchester instead of an apartment in Paris. It’s a dull and miserable existence where hardly anyone is ever capable of meeting you where you are intellectually. You constantly have to mentally stoop to people and what’s worse is that it worms its way into you unless you’re careful about it. Plus, the entire modern world is structured to cater to the lowest common denominator so good luck finding any popular media or pastime that you like to be able to form friendships out of.

if genius is one in 100 million, and the population has exploded to 7 billion... shouldn't we have a shitload more geniuses around right now?

How would you define genius? Someone who scores well on that arbitrary test? Not that I disagree with you. Even being somewhat above average is a curse. Having to live our lives surrounded by people who play cards for fun, who watch South Park for amusement. I don’t know what’s worse, the solitude or the sense of degradation when we surrender and spend time in company. Great literature is like the only escape, the only way to feel that someone else in the world understands and relates to us.
