In the interest of contributing to /lit/ as a place that discusses books, I started reading this today. Anyone read it? Or his book The Shallows?
>>
its slop for midwits, there are actual philosophers who write about this stuff.
Any book on technology that is just "LE x IS BAD" undermines any genuine capacity to understand it.
Read marshall mcluhan's the medium is the massage if you want an actual good intro that isn't literal garbage. I'd just the carr book away.

throw the carr book away*

I read the Shallows and it was good. Not sure how much more there is to say about the subject though.

Lol who the fuck cares what some fartsmeller thinks? The interesting part of the Shallows covered actual research on diminishing ability to process and understand text at length precisely because of a specialization on skimming and constant novelty seeking. That’s not just some fag’s opinion.

like i said shit slop for midwits you just don't have what it takes brother i'd give up reading as a whole you aren't good enough for it

Well, to give Carr credit in The Shallows, he was fairly neutral. He wasn't 'book good/internet bad', or 'old good/new bad', he seemed to simply want to understand and chart what was going to be the change from a literate society into an internet society. What was going to be lost and what was going to be gained. And for the individual, as well.

Now, from what I understand, in Superbloom, he does make a far stronger stance.

I think i am interested in his thoughts, and the research he reference, and how it's changed from 2010 to 2025.

Let's be honest. The Shallows was wrote in 2010. I wonder if Carr looks back at his writing and realizes how naive he may have been. But who could have foreseen the changes to the internet and its usage, and effects, from 2010 to 2025.

Thoughts on Douglas Rushkoff?

I've never read him.

we weren't in a literate society before the internet lol we haven't been for centuries. carr is just butchering actual authors

Haven't read Superbloom. Saw the local library has a copy so should pick it up. Enjoyed The Shallows but think all the problems Carr described have gotten worse.

This is largely the point of Superbloom. Certain applications of the internet have been causing social disfunction to an extent that we should no longer ignore.

It's not trying to be some "Top 100 Books For Extremely Intelligent People" philosophy book /lit/ can put on their bookshelf to impress the guests they'll never have. It's just a damn book. It's popular because it explores it's premise more thoroughly than other social media=bad books.
