Highly dependent on your location. My sister is a high school teacher in the US, and she says it's genuinely fucking awful how bad literacy is. She said most high schoolers are lucky if they are reading at a 3rd/4th grade level, and there's a chunk of them every year in her classes that are worse and are reading at 1st/2nd grade levels or even lower. This isn't even in a predominantly black or Hispanic area either.There was just a study posted here the other day about some big uni where half the first-year students were incapable of accurately summarizing what Charles Dickens was talking about in the opening of one of his books where he's detailing the morning hustle and bustle in some area of London.If you're ever out and about in the US and wonder why everyone feels so incredibly fucking stupid, it's because they genuinely are. Half the adults in this country now read at 5th grade or below, and a quarter of the adults in the US are factually illiterate and cannot understand written language or instructions in any language.I remember reading somewhere that if a child fails to understand how to properly read by 3rd grade, the statistical probability that they are doomed for life is very high. By the way, I want to remind you that this issue is entirely unique to the US. No other "1st world" country is currently struggling this severely. Gen Alpha can't even fucking write. I've known people at Ivy Leagues who write like a slightly retarded 5th grader from 1970. They can't even handwrite, literally. As the OP, my unsubstantiated theory is that in addition to immigration, increased internet usage (and the lack of grammar regulation there, for example) plays a role in reducing English proficiency among the general populace.With heavy policing on internet activity for minors in countries like the UK and Australia, I honestly wonder if one unintended long-term side effect might end up being improvements in the grammar, usage and mechanics department.If infinite immigration doesn't offset it, that is.

Trying to fill a couple apprentice positions and we have a question related to the job for them to answer. Not looking for 'right' answers as much as we are a logical thought process based on the question and what would presumably have been some minor research into the position before interviewing. From that I have seen the applicants under 25 seem to lack critical thinking skills, but don't seem to have an issue reading. But that's a fairly small sample size, so who knows. I don't deal with people that age on a regular basis.
