There have been very few novels I've found to not be slogs, and even the best ones have dragged a bit.

That could owe to a variety of causes. For example, in a too-easy novel the author can spend paragraphs setting the stage for the next plot event that is entirely skippable if you've been following and already have a satisfactory mental image of the setting.
