The early republic commando books were good. They started out as books about a team of clones thrown together, dealing with the loss of their brothers, learning to find new brotherhood, and launching high risk spec ops/intelligence missions against the separatists.

They always had a degree of mando wank and Jedi hate but it increased with every book until it becomes unreadable but the first 2 books are good.

This one sucks but the first halo book was solid. Just buy/read a printing from before 2010.
