I think the bigger tragedy with Bloom is that he identifies so strongly with Falstaff but isn't really like him at all. If I had to name an author that has the Falstaffian element, I'd say Robertson Davies does, and that's probably because Rabelais was such a big influence on him.

Bloom wanted to be Falstaff, but wasn't.If I had to compare Harold Bloom to a character from literature, it might, ironically, be literature's most famous Bloom, Ulysses' main character. There's a touch of Leopold's character to Harold.
