>read until I hit a word I don’t know
>open a new tab to look it up
>open a new tab to browse 4chan and YouTube
>waste 30 minutes before coming back to the book
How do I stop this short of purchasing physical books?
>>
you don't.

Get a dictionary. The older the better.
>>
>>24793566
just have a tab already open to a dictionary, or an ebook version of a dictionary already open, or possibly a tablet with a dictionary open that can't connect to the internet
less temptation if you don't have to navigate there in the first place

First, you shouldn't be reading books from a backlight screen anyway, since it causes several negative effects, like eye strain, difficulty sleeping, and headaches, and since you're a young man, you probably already spend a lot of time in front of the computer and your phone, so giving yourself a bit of a break and switching to a physical book will help a lot
At the very least, get a kindle for reading. Don’t keep objects nearby that can distract you while you're reading, like a phone
And buy physical books and circle the words you don’t know so you can look them up late
>I can't afford it
Stop lying, I'm a third worlder and I have a decent library without having to make sacrifices, just looking at the amazon dot us:
The odyssey + The Grapes of Wrath + The Idiot + Adventures of Huckleberry Finn + Confessions + Don Quixote + The Odyssey + Pride and Prejudice +The Republic + Metamorphoses + The Aeneid + The Count of Monte Cristo + The Iliad cost less than 100 dollars, all of that without any discount and neither picking the cheapest version. I know it’s usually not that cheap since I chose books that sell a lot and therefore aren’t that expensive, but even if it were 3x more expensive, the idea that physical books are affordable still holds

Are you reading on a computer? Install calibre, it has a built-in search function so you won't need to have a browser open.

Discipline. You hate this so much that you would likely feel some catharsis upon breaking this habit. At least chase the high of accomplishment.
>>
>>24793566
Just keep reading and you'll grow out of it.

leechblock is a good ad-on for web browsers that allows you to create multiple blacklists or whitelists, and set them to be manually active or active during certain times.

If you read from say 6PM-8PM, block 4chan and any other distracting website during that time.

Discipline doesn't work, social media is designed to addict.

Discipline does work, if it doesn't you lack it.
>>
>>24793566
don't look up words
that's for sissies
>>
>>24793832
OP here, I-I am a sissy
>>
>>24793802
This, especially if you read books you actually like.
>>
>>24793570
this fixed the same problem for me
>>
I downloaded an offline dictionary app for my phone so that I can read and look for words without being connected to the internet. That way I don't get distracted.

Make 4chan the reward. For example, read 10 pages before rewarding yourself with shitposting
>>
>>24793566
Don't watch youtube, limit yourself to viewing porn as your exclusive form of video.
>>
>>24793566
kindle's dictionary works offline. At least on my kindle, I haven't updated it or connected it to the internet in years.
>>
>>24793566
Look up the word, then go back to reading. You retarded or something?
Want me to design you a fucking social media algorithm to tell you to stop fucking around? Need a fucking dopamine patch to help you quit being spineless? Maybe take your own life into your own hands like the human being you allegedly are.

Based on context clues, sissy means well informed and an adroit communicator.

Within Scientology this is known as a "misunderstood word." That's not just a description, it's specifically the second so-called "barrier to study." Whatever you read afterwards, will be understood in a "blank" state, which will sabotage all future learning. When you give up as a result of such a blank state, it's called a "blow." That's what you're doing when you distract yourself as a form of giving up on your study. In other words: You have to go back in whatever you're reading and identify the misunderstood word that made you lose interest in what you're reading to begin with. If you were truly invested in the book, you wouldn't lose interest from just looking up a word. I recommend looking into the Dianetics study methods to solve all issues like this.

I don't know because I already read physical books, and I also own 2 different print dictionaries, for American and British English respectively. I grew up at a time where kids weren't given a screen to rot their brain, though, so perhaps you are just too far gone to learn how to read properly.

My kindle has wikipedia and dictionary lookup on highlight. Would recommend.

just jot the word down on a piece of paper and look it up later. it sounds like you shouldn't have your devices in the same room you're reading in, and, realistically, not knowing the occasional word is not going to affect your understanding of the text.

oh i didn't see that you're not reading physical books. if screens are making you this dysfunctional then physical books are clearly worth saving up for.
