What's with all the polygamy in this book?
>>24793826It gives the future scenario depicted in the book verisimilitude.
>>24794043But it also makes it unrelatable.
>>24794303I don't think fiction, never mind science fiction, is for you in that case.
>>24794310I've been reading sci-fi since fourth grade.
>>24793826>homosexual writer likes to write about polygamyimagine my shock
>>24793826The main character was pretty unlikable. >Several times throughout the book he records messages for his families but he makes sure not to say names so he can just send the message to both his family on earth and his family on mars. Couldn’t be bothered to write two messages I guess.>And then at the end of the book proceeds to cheat on both wives with the ships doctor. a generous reading is Clarke pointing out it’s not just technology that will change but cultures and mores as well. Or maybe he just got off to it
>>24794459Well it's about tie you knew that fiction is not real by definition. Calling it unreliable is a silly thing to say. >>24795361A girl in every port does mimic sailors of old.It is barely there though, as are their characters. Just props for the story.
>>24793826Old sci-fi authors were more perverse than anyone likes admitting
I read this as a teenager and at the time, I remember thinking it was very cool and interesting. But now, 20+ years later, I cannot remember any details about the book at all.The only thing I remember is that the Ramans do everything in threes.
>>24796431I reread it recently for the first time in about 15 or so years. I totally forgot that the Ramans totally do appear (or rather their stewards do) and I also totally forgot that the team totally do break into one of the grey metal buildings (I thought I remembered that they had found virtually nothing, but that wasn't the case).
>>24793826the is my favorite hard sci-fi book, but i noticed that as well. i also noticed it in what other i've read of clarke's work. it seems to be a "magical realm", an example of an artist using their work to create a world in which their fetish is the norm.
>>24793826DON'T BE RAMA RAMA AND SNIFF IT UP YOUR NOSE
>>24793826Clarke was a total pervert. When you are paying attention, in 2010 there's a pair of one Soviet and one American astronaut and since they're out in space and there's nobody else around they just start fucking. Not openly causing disruption, but it's a small ship and everyone knows exactly what's going on. The American boss quietly tells the American to cut it out, and it's just sort of left at that and not developed further. The two are depicted as becoming friends in the movie, but this detail is left out.
>>24799133They don't fuck, Clark is debating the impossibility of zero g sex.In the movie Dr. Floyd and the hot Russian just cuddle during airbraking.
What’s with the Satan worship in this book?
>>24800223You didn't get it.
