>>24804485>>24804497I agree with Gurm on this. But not really because of fan reactions. For me it kills any sense of political tension or military urgency, leaving only intrigue and interpersonal things as sources for conflict. You are outnumbered, outmaneuvered, outclassed, and undersupplied? Fret not! Shyttarion will just burn all of them in the end anyway! All tension from this point onward is about whether or not the Albino Herrenrasse will choose to use him or if they can find because he is lost because Gurm keeps separating him from the albinos because dragons actively murder tension and he knows it. This was cemented to me when reading House of the Dragon. Just felt like the white-haired kid at the playground had a everything-proof shield. I mean I guess he kind of offsets it by the fact inter-dragon combat is a possibility. But it essentially precludes the Targs having any threats to their rule that are not rooted within themselves.

>Lady Lysa and Lord Petyr had the third-story bedchamber to themselves, but the tower was small . . . and true to her word, her aunt screamed. It had begun to rain outside, driving the feasters into the hall one floor below, so they heard most every word. "Petyr," her aunt moaned. "Oh, Petyr, Petyr, sweet Petyr, oh oh oh. There, Petyr, there. That's where you belong." Lady Lysa's singer launched into a bawdy version of "Milady's Supper," but even his singing and playing could not drown out Lysa's cries. "Make me a baby, Petyr," she screamed, "make me another sweet little baby. Oh, Petyr, my precious, my precious, PEEEEEETYR!" Deciding against the five-year gap is where it all went wrong, right? Workimg the gap in, treating the new book as a distinct sequel to the original trilogy as a whole, and simply allowing things to have simply been backstory is the only way this could have worked.Cause deciding against the gap turned what was a series of books into a shapeless stream of chapters.

But Euron returned and has a plan he has in motion, why would Euron just wait 5 years after becoming king before attacking Westeros or sending Vic to get a dragon>Cersei somehow doesn't shit the bed and ruin everything for 5 whole years while regent of Tomen>Tyrion does what, kills his dad and spends 5 years drunk mopping about his life and family while depressed and wanting to rape and murder Cersei before going to find Dany, does he get sent to FAegon and spend 5 years tutoring him?It struggles to work for most of the PoV characters but also requires a most non PoV to sit on their hands for years when they have no reason to. The sparrow movement gets their new High Sparrow and then do nothing? The wars in the free cities, elections in Volantis and Braavos, slave uprisings inpsired by Danys recent conquest of Meereen etc.The main problem is Euron, he killed his brother and came back the next day when dragons came back into the world, made himself king and is going to Oldtown while also getting a dragon. Why would he wait 5 years after being crowned king, or wait 5 years to kill his brother and commence the plan? Its Euron the timeskip just doesn't work for. The timeskip should have had Dany in the grass sea for 5 years. but then she would have kids etc it just gets messy

I don't think the 2nd and 3rd books are very good. Dunk has basically no impact on their outcome. The lord and lady get married whilst he's just there, and after the disaster the last time he went jousting. He for some reason decides to joust again, where once again the outcome is decided without him. If he hadn't even shown up the events in books 2 and 3 are almost unchanged.
The three betrayals will be Danys three dragons. Think about it.
>>24809853>Dany>having kids

>>24809547All bro had to do was stay at Illyrios, the Dorne would’ve gave him his crown.
>>24810517>>24810536Viserys exists to fulfill a role in Dany's storyline; I.E to begin her route to autority in autonomy an empowerment. That said, I believe GURM would have made the character much less one dimensional had he realized he was writing himself into a corner by writing Dany's primary caretaker for her entire childhood the way he was. He later had to modify the guy a little once he wanted to delve into Dany's childhood or give her knowledge from that period which she would have only really gotten from him. Assuming they didn't ever stay at any magnate's house for very long, which I do think is the case.

>>24810625George hard R martin doesn't think most of these things through. Lannisport is on the western side of Westeros with no one to trade with, they're wealthy because they have gold mines and no other resources in their mountains. He has a rough idea of where he wants the story to be and just glosses over how it got there. It's why the next book is taking so long because he can't gloss over what he's already written

>>24810789To be fair to the Ironborn, they're not completely unsalvageable like the Dothraki. There are several attempts throughout their history to reject their retarded culture and embrace the ways of the mainlanders. Aeron for example thinks most Ironborn are degenerate sinners because they no longer have their priests completely drown them. They just have the misfortune of being led by Balon at the start of the series, who's the first Grejoy since Dagon to be dumb enough to believe in the old way.
>>24810970every single Ironborn we've seen that isn't a complete retard is hated by most of the rest

>>24809853I see no problem with much of this. The five-year-gap was abandoned when the prologue meant to explain what had happened grew so long he just decided to turn it into a whole book. A book that grew so long that it became two books.AFFC and ADWD are loaded with filler and suffer from a huge lack of direction, just because the gardener couldn't stand to not write every detail of what happened in the gap.Imagine if, for whatever reason, AGOT was going to start with a prologue showing Robert's Rebellion. But that gets expanded to include the Tourney at Harrenhall, and eventually becomes its own book, and that turns into three books. And so AGOT became the fourth book. But when he started writing it with an intended 15-year gap, he just couldn't make it work without tons of flashbacks, so then he just writes Robert's entire reign and as of 2047 Jon Arryn hasn't even been killed yet. That didn't happen because GRRM wasn't retarded yet.Seriously, if ADWD opened with the status quo being more or less what it was 3/4 of the way through the book, with a five year timeskip at the beginning, I'd have been perfectly happy. The convenience of a time skip in between installments is it's a big squirt of narrative squid ink to hide plot holes and inconsistencies so you can gloss over minutae instead of getting buried alive in it.

>>24811167It gets even worse when you consider where the Iron islands are located and they're forbidden from reaving Westeros. Meaning they sail around an entire continent to reach Essos. Just put them (and Lannisport) on the EAST
>>24810789>>24810667What I never understood is the free cities themselves. They super rich and powerful with huge mercenary armies to war on each other endlessly, but they have no lesser cities? Or strict borders and towns. Why are the free cities city states and not countries? I mean Braavos is meant to be a stand in of Venice and Rhodes, but Venice had a land empire outside the city and Rhodes was a city state, during Bronze age Greece. So either the free cities need to be radically less technologically advanced and populated to be bronze age tier cities, or they should have a network of towns, villages, lesser cities, forts and seaports.Dothraki makes sense this way, sure they can't take one of the free cities but they can burn and destory most of the outlying villages, and towns etc. But they should have armour if they're Mongolians, but they're not they're more like fantasy Scythians who didn't really have heavy armour. But again its a bronze age nomadic horse peopleTL:DR Westeros is in a forever Medieval period and Essos is in a forever Bronze age period, its the only way it can make sense
>>24812754I can write Hodor chapter.
Could you imagine an alternate history where the ramsay/reek nonsense doesn't happen and the insane jeyne westerling plot doesn't succeed? How much would actually be different from where we're currently left?
>>24812947Even if Robb still married Jeyne Westerling, Walder would never dare do the Red Wedding so as the North was still intact, he's too cowardly and cautious for that. One aspect as to why Roose agreed to the Red Wedding that is under discussed is that by burning Winterfell, Ramsay kind of forced his hand, because if Robb were to go north and find out that Bolton men burned Winterfell, Roose would lose his head.Without Winterfell getting burned, the forces left in the North would probably be able to fight off the Ironborn and retake their fallen castles once Balon dies and Victarion and Asha go back to the islands, so Robb would be able to continue fighting in the Riverlands and Tywin and the Tyrells would probably grind down his forces until he has to agree to a negotiated settlement, probably just that he has bend the knee and is sent back home.Hell, the Lannisters might even send Sansa back, because so long as Robb, Bran and Rickon live, her claim to Winterfell is worthless, and a friendly North would be more useful, because their remaining forces could help take back the Iron Islands. So all in all, more soldiers and smallfolk die because the war lasts longer, but eventually good king Joffrey reigns supreme anyways
>daenerys chapter
>>24812974Aren't you forgetting about someone?
Stannis is the rightful king
>>24812997After Stannis loses on the Blackwater, he thrives on the chaos engulfing the North and the Red Wedding not happening is the worst possible thing that could happen ti him, because he loses the Stormlords, but he can't rally the North so long as Robb is still claiming to be King in the North. If Stannis still goes to the Wall and defeats the Wildlings, the North will see him as a foreign occupier as soon as he rides south of the Gift. And even if Robb bends the knee to the Lannisters, he won't back Stannis because that would mean another war with the Lannisters, but under worse odds and with more ambitious goals. Also the Lannisters would probably take hostages after the war ends, and Robb wouldn't risk endangering them by protecting Stannis.Best ending for Stannis in this scenario is Robb allowing him to take the black out of gratitude for defending the Wall.
>>24813027Robb and Joffrey die though, Stannis cursed them.
>>24813033If Robb's death is inevitable even without the Red Wedding, and he still dies by chocking on his breakfast or something, there's still Bran and Rickon, which would mean that actual governance of the North falls to Catelyn. And if Joffrey dies then there's always Tommen, but that won't really matter because Tywin is running the show in KL anyways. In Dance, Barbrey Dustin says that the Starks were doomed after Winterfell was burned, but without thinking about it you really can't know how much this one event is actually the most decisive moment in the series. And Stannis should've probably cursed Tywin to die, because if Joffrey and Cersei were allowed to run the realm without him, most of the lords would've come running to Stannis before the year was out
>>24813010It is known.
>>24812880GRRM's knowledge of actual history is shockingly bad, which should serve as enough of an explanation for everything that doesn't make sense.

>>24810608>>24810625>>24810648>>24810667GRRM has already been slowly retconning Viserys, via Dany's memories, into a much more involved, competent and knowledgeable brother than portrayed in the first novel. There was also an interview last year where he said he realized he killed off a character that was actually necessary for what he planned out, and I'm wondering whether he didn't mean Viserys.
>>24813078Wasn't that Kevan (only competent Lannister supporter in KL)?
>>24813083No, you could easily retcon his death as him having miraculously survived.
>>24811075I consider that unlikely, considering that Dany and him had to eat rotten garbage at times, which does not exactly paint a picture of them having any dedicated caretakers. Even if we indulge your theorybrain it would likely be someone following them from a distance making sure no one stabs them to death or something. Which does not affect my point at all.
>>24813084What if Pycelle also survives? What about the Oberyn poisoning Tywin theory?
>>24808569>Deciding against the five-year gap is where it all went wrong, right?Yeah, kinda. The ultimate reason was his le gardener bullshit and lack of discipline, but scrapping the five-year gap was the final bullet in the head of the series.

>>24813425>He's admitted that he's only really read English history deeplyAnd yet he thinks everyone on Westeros would speak the same language, even when separated by a sea or a fucking gigantic ice wall.
>>24812757I think they still do illegal raids in the north, and they definitely still raid beyond the wall

>>24813175>I consider that unlikely, considering that Dany and him had to eat rotten garbage at timesProbably once and only after Viserys acted like a retard and got himself and Daenerys kicked out from whatever noble household was putting them up at the time but Illyrio and Varys would have gotten them a new patron.
>>24813765Even in that case, if they actually had minders tard wrangling Viserys he would have not eaten garbage, because said tard wranglers would have used their stipend to put them into a shitass inn where they served gruel or something.

If the sample chapters are any indication twow will have the same glacial pacing as affc and adwd.
How did the mute boy knew rickon and osha headed to skagoos? He claims to follow them but i find it hard to believe a child could follow expierenced wilding with a direwolf for hundreds of miles without getting spotted. So i have two theoriesThe boy is trolling davos and manderly and he choose skagos because it's the funniest place he could think of. Maybe what he says is true and he follow rickon and osha but got spotted by them. Osha said she will protect him but once they reach white harbor he has to tell manderlys bullshit lie that will only waste wyman time. My second theory is actually more plausible, George is a shitty writer, this could also be proven by him including Aegon and Lady Stoneheart in the books
>>24815218The sample chapters are like a decade out of date at this point, he's probably rewritten them 10 times by now.
>>24814994It was the will of the Seven, just like the doom of Valyria
>>24812311>Doesn't really line up with the whole love gold thing.Tyrion is a hidden Targaryen.
>>24815222I think Manderly could be simply lying to Davos. The plan makes no sense anyway, he sends one man to look for a child he never seen to a giant island full of cannibals. Yeah Rickon is suppose to be with a wilding woman and a direwolf. But what is Davos suppose to do? Go from village to village and just ask people? I think Wyman Manderly just made up the story to fuck with Davos.
>>24809911>When she woke, gasping, her thighs were slick with blood. She has periods, she can have kids.

>>24815222Shaggy-dog stories play upon the audience's preconceptions of joke-telling. The audience listens to the story with certain expectations, which are either simply not met or met in some entirely unexpected manner.[2] A lengthy shaggy-dog story derives its humour from the fact that the joke-teller held the attention of the listeners for a long time (such jokes can take five minutes or more to tell) for no reason at all, as the long-awaited resolution is essentially meaningless,According to Partridge and the Morrises, the archetypical shaggy-dog story involves an advertisement placed in the Times announcing a search for a shaggy dog. In the Partridge story, an aristocratic family living in Park Lane is searching for a lost dog, and an American answers the advertisement with a shaggy dog that he has found and personally brought across the Atlantic, only to be received by the butler at the end of the story who takes one look at the dog and shuts the door in his face, saying, "But not so shaggy as that, sir!"
>>24815252But then the question becomes, why does Lord Lamprey even bother? Because anything he does with Davos except kill him puts him in hot water with the Lannisters and Lord Too-fat-to-sit-a-horse wouldn't risk their ire without a good reason, he says so himself
>>24815279I am assuming that he's not sure if Stannis would be able to win even with Manderly support. So in case Stannis loses no one will probably know about Davos since Manderly probably assumes he will die in Skagos. In case Stannis wins Manderly can just tell he didn't actually execute Davos just send him on a noble quest to find a kid and davos just died looking for him.

>>24815279>>24815299The one fucking thing Stannis is known for is executing turncoats even of they turn coat Tto his own side, just for being turncoats. Wyman knows that envoys or not, Stannis sees him as a dead man walking since the moment he even pretended to bend the knee to Cersei. If Wyman just went and readily kissed Stannis' ring to get his revenge on the Freys, Stannis would commend his choice and honesty and then immediately order him burned alive for treason, and then probably like marry Wylla to one of his knights to give the White Harbor over to him. So if Wyman indeed plans to throw in with Stannis and betray Cersei and her lackeys, he needs good leverage on Stannis and a proof that he truly maintains his loyalty to Starks. Stannis needs a pliant Stark to sit in Winterfell, and Wyman needs to show that his mummery of submitting to the Iron Throne was done all in service of saving the life of his sovereign, a Stark. So getting Rickon is a wonderful twofer that makes Wyman both useful and not a total fatass traitor who must be made into an example. And doing it through Davos is both convenient (Wyman doesn't need to risk his own fat chins or your men) and earns credit to Davos, who's one of like three people whom Stannis trusts, so that Davos might further portray Wyman in positive light to Stannis. And it is all fully totally completely deniable if nothing works out. It's all around a damn reasonable plan, though it relied almost entirely on pure dumb luck to fulfill the prerequisites for it, like Wyman getting his hands on Wex and Davos arriving to parley alone with nothing but his boots to his name.

Do you think Doran is a deliberate self insert of GRRM? Like when you first read the books it's easy to think both Doran and Martin are some geniuses with plans within plans. But on rereads you realize that their plans are really shitty and by stupid decisions and their inaction they both ruined their legacy. Martell dynasty will be probably mostly gone because in the end Doran supported the wrong dragon, and because show turned out to be complete shit, Martin will be remembered mostly for not being able to finish the story he started.

>>24815879Assuming his wife survives him, Paris, Elio and Linda are going to overrule him and will force a release of the Winds of Winter and will probably find someone else (likely Abraham and Corey) to finish Dream. They said they wouldn't do it anymore, but when they get the blank check from Simon and Schuster to finish the most anticipated book of the century, they'll change their minds.
>>24815894I hope so, also i hope they would overrule the stupid autistic decision to only have 2 more books. Because no way they can finish the story in satisfying way in such short span unless maybe by dividing eacb book into 2 parts, which was done with dance in my country
>>24815900>the stupid autistic decision to only have 2 more booksAgreed. He doesn't want to split it more and we're seeing the consequences of it because The Winds of Winter can't actually fit inside of The Winds of Winter no matter how many times George rewrites the book. He has some holdups with Bran and Samwell, but it's clear that he wants Winds to end in a way that he can finish the story in 1500 pages... which means Dany needs to be heading to Westeros or arriving in Westeros by the end of Winds.
>>24815891George forced Viserys' dead into the plot, since he was originally meant to die and be avenged by Dany. And then he realized it would be could to have more than one Targaryen, so he made up Aegon on the spot.

Especially that Wex somehow menaged to follow rickon and osha and a direwolf without getting spotted. I mean i guess he could just go after their tracks, get food from smallfolk who didn't know he was ironborn, just some mute stray kid but it's still too convenient. Almost as if it was fake or George got extremely lazy. Like how did he even overhear they were going to Skagos? They would 100% recognize him since there were like what? 20 ironborn in winterfell? How did they get to skagos without being recognize. I know rickon was believed to be dead but a child travelling with a giant wolf wpuld still get some attention. Did the Umber helped Rickon? Was it wildlings? I doubt Osha menaged to sail there alone, the waters around Skagos are said to be very dangerous. It just makes very little sense to me and Wex story definitely stands out as a weirdest part of Dance of Dragons.
I know more likely explanation is just George being lazy but what if Wex was sent to Manderly by Ramsey? Ramsey knows Rickon and Bran are still alive. He doesn't know where but i assume he has his men looking for them throughout the north. Maybe he deliberately sent Wex to spread misinformation, kinda like with sending the pink letter. So they waste time to search for Rickon in Skagos while he actually finds Rickon in the north, and the rickon dearh from the tv show happens during the battle of bastards after the stannis possible defeat. It would also nicely fit into the whole shaggydog type story menaing anticlimatic red herring. But again Jon vargs into shaggydog that eats an unicorn.unicorns live in skagos. >>24818484"Hmm perhaps a third breakfast is in order"*bookfag bursts through GRRM's window*"It's almost done!">FINISH IT. FINISH IT!" I've written another 100 pages!"
>>24818743"Mayhaps another prequel!"
>>24818542>>24818575Turns out I’d misremembered and had actually continued watching to the end of S7, so I’m just watching S8 by itself.I was thinking it wouldn’t be as bad as they say, but it’s pretty bad. They just keep putting pairs of characters together that they think would have “interesting” conversations without any regard to a plot, and then the dialogue itself is fanfic tier and doesn’t move anything forward.
>>24805398Take away their religious independence.Aenys allowed them to expel septons from the islands, take away that right and just watch all the thralls and smallfolk start converting.
>>24812880>They super rich and powerful with huge mercenary armies to war on each other endlessly, but they have no lesser cities? They do.All along the Rhoyne are a bunch of smaller cities that apparently belong to Volantis. They're called towns but are apparently larger than any city in Westeros.I assume the Disputed Lands are also full of towns and farms and shit, since mercenary armies fighting each other does sound quite civilized. Instead of constantly sacking towns they just change hands over and over.
>>24814994To be fair, there were only two adult dragons, one of which was chained and had the roof fall in and kill it.The Warrior came down and killed the other.
>>24814994Humans with weapons > gay evil magic
Andals lost. Valyrians lost.Rhoynar lost.
>>24818322Gaelor Breakbuck and he was a good friend...
>>24818537GRRM is a hack who didn't even look into the basics of geography and ecology.
>>24819529Blonde Andal bimbos Purple-eyed Valyrian whores Brown Rhoynar sluts All bound by the law of Prima Nocta to perform for their northern lords...
>>24818933The thralls might convert, but the smallfolk would be harder to change. From the few chapters we had in the Iron Islands we can see that piracy provides this class with greater possibilities for social advancement. the alternative would be to fish or work in the darkness of the iron mines under the same feudal system as the rest of the continent.
>>24819529I like to think (cope) he has changed it by now.Maybe being old and fat made him less inanely averse to satisfactory story conclusions.
>>24820024I think he is beyond the stage of being able to change things, its why winds is never coming.
>>24820256his mom is gay and he is a test tube baby...
How will GRRM fuck over our KING? Self imposed exile feels likely, I just want him to have a happy ending, but there’s no way he does.
>>24820648Just leaves him dead.
>>24819529Stannisbros…..
Do you think Lyanna enjoyed having sex with Rhaegar
>>24821147Of course, why else would you damn an entire nation, and her family? Thats what good dick does to a woman.
>>24818872It isn’t actually that bad. It’s extremely, inexcusably rushed, but the outcomes make sense. At least, the outcomes in a scenario where “the white walkers kill everyone” wasn’t an acceptable ending. The Jaime ending especially feels like what GRRM wanted, and I think people misunderstand it. He’s fronting it as a heel-turn to Brienne so it hurts her less, and going back to die with Cersei as a combination of a last act of penance, and an act of mercy towards what’s essentially an overgrown womanchild that didn’t really mean to cause any of this. Bran already told him he was going to die, and he just realized what that meant he had to do.
>>24821279>big evil guy was evil because he sucked at singingBravo Tolkien.
>>24821352>He’s fronting it as a heel-turn to Brienne so it hurts her lessThis was my initial interpretation but that's definitely not portrayed that way in the show. Or the show does a poor job of getting it across to the viewer, like I know it sort of implies Jamie rang the bells iirc. Crazy thing is they only needed like one scene to convey this and not completely destroy Jamie arc, and that's establish that Cersei doesn't plan to surrender and maybe relay it through that stupid Bron/Jamie/Tyrion scene. Then have Jamie attempt to get to the city, attempt to surrender the city die in the process with Cersei, so we as the audience know he tried to do the right thing but none of the other character will know he tried to do the right thing, kind of like the killing of the mad king.
>>24821448They could have hammered it in harder yeah. But I think that was the intention. Idk if they’ve said otherwise in interviews.

>>24821674I have no memory of watching this but have liked several of the comments. I need to get off YouTube.
>>24821674I love these books and I could care less if he ever finishes them. I hate the fanbase to the point where I hope he doesn’t finish.
>>24821443>le gray and gray morality
>>24821728Yeah I really want the show ending to be the only canon ending. I don’t want the possibility of George giving danyfags and targfags any W’s. Let em seethe forever
>>24817960I can worldbuild way better than GRRM but I can't come up with any stories to tell within those worlds. Fuck my life.
>>24822115Nigger you get the story first then you world build
>>24822115Just steal shit from real history and other fantasy series and tweak it a little like George does
>>24822126Yeah I'm too autistic for that, I have to make the world first so I can make sure its geologically, ecologically, climatologically, and sociologically realistic.
>>24821728>>24821957I have the same opinion on the ending as I had when I first read it in 2011.The only ending that fits with his whole thesis and theming is for them all to die to the white walkers. Anything else is a cop out.Maybe, MAYBE have the COTF then kill the walkers and start rebuilding, but not until all humans are dead.
>>24822178I cannot think of a less satisfying conclusion to a story than "rocks fall everyone dies."
>>24822244The ending of every story is everyone dies, some writers are just cowards
>>24822247Ending the series with everyone dying to the others would unironically be worse than the show ending. It would be the ultimate form of SuBvErTiNg ExPeCtaTiOnS.
>>24822299It’s literally the only ending that makes sense with the themes and worldview of the series.

>>24814619I dont know if we saw the same fic but if you read mysticalmuddle then I agree with you that george will not be able to write them half as good as that fic. Here is a link https://archiveofourown.org/works/26618530and a sample: Now he washed her chest, the dips of her ribs, and her breasts carefully, with the lightest touch he could. As he touched her navel, dried blood lingering there absurdly like it’d soaked through her stained shirt, as he was making it fleck off with each touch, she said at last in an unhappy little voice, “Does someone take care of you already?” And then with rancor, “She does a poor job. Jon, I could do better.”It struck him dizzy, how much he’d missed her. Arya had been his most ardent defender; if he’d been the one to wipe away more of her tears than she had his, t’was only because he was older. “No,” Jon rasped out, and rested his hand on her belly, feeling it rise and fall with each of her fast breaths. He had a passel of squires he didn’t want, and aides for everything from war-advise to how best to distribute Winterfell’s fast-disappearing stores. Jon knew women a little better now, and he wasn’t ignorant of Wynafryd Manderly’s long looks, or even the way the chambermaid lingered as she poured out fresh wash water at the end of the night.None of them, not even one of those many people, had ever cried unfair that Jon must sit with the squires on feast days, or stay home when all his other siblings might ride to White Harbor.None would ever throw themselves from a horse to reach him faster, or say his name as if their heart was breaking with joy. None would hold the news of his death so tightly they’d faint at the very sight of him. None would ever demand he take their socks off, or call him stupid when he spoke without thought.Jon couldn’t imagine a single one of them ever looking at him with eyes wet for sheer sorrow that he’d been alone.“No one,” and he wanted it so much that it choked him. He wanted her care back so much that he could barely speak. It just seemed too much to ask, when all he’d ever prayed for was that she come back to him, even if she came back a stranger. Even if they lost the closeness they’d had, the closeness he craved.Arya looked so wary now, as if he’d ever turn her away. He croaked out, “Will you? Will you look after me?”Tears clung to the thick fringe of her lashes. She was reaching for him, that beautiful mindless reach, knowing he would reach back. Jon wanted to spend the rest of his life reaching back. He folded her into his arms, the edge of the tub biting into his stomach and the bathwater soaking his shirt through, and he pressed his temple to her shoulder and shuddered out years’ worth of worry and fear in a single choking breath.
