>"In Newton this island may boast of having produced the greatest and rarest genius that ever arose for the ornament and instruction of the species. From modesty, ignorant of his superiority above the rest of mankind; and thence, less careful to accommodate his reasonings to common apprehensions: More anxious to merit than to acquire fame: He was, from these causes, long unknown to the world; but his reputation at last broke out with a lustre, which scarcely any writer, during his own life-time, had ever before attained."
I've read in a schopenhauer essay that newton basically took robert hooke's work. considering leibniz also discovered calculus, I don't see what the world would miss out on without newton.
>>24815333I can't get over how subtly smug he looks in that portrait.
>>24815333If a Scotsman compliments an Englishman, you can assume that is is an accurate assessment, for they do not do so lightly.
>>24816376I sense Hume was embarrassed to be a Scot
>>24816345Yeah but be real, he is the only canonical philosopher you could hang out with and have a good time eating cheese and drinking. Every other philosopher is autistic, schizo, or autisto-schizophrenic. I think he’s a retard but his works always make me happy, his wholesome and grounded personality emanates through the pages like a comfy fire. A girl was bitching the other day about gaining weight and I said “what are you so worried about? Hume was fat.”
Why was he so racist bros, I thought he was above the follies of false assumptions...

>>24816315>Criticism of Newton's calculus>Schopenhauer also demonstrated a lack of understanding of Newton's mathematical innovations. A commentator on his work notes that Schopenhauer referred to Newton's invention of calculus as a mere "arithmetical confirmation," a remark critics have called "embarrassingly stupid" for underestimating its true significance. Lol
