Why do redditors hate Cugel so much?
>>24816790Fuck Cugel
>>24816790Why do you know so much about reddit, and why do you think any of us cares?Fuck off.
>>24816790Probably cause he changes the tone of the stories drastically once he shows upAlso he's a dick. Fuck that asshole.
Redditors like >>24817446 and >>24817472 hate him because they've never read a picaresque before. And because he's mean to women.
>>24817481What? I'm a redditor for liking him?
He sells a woman into sex slavery and he rapes another one. But both women are as shitty as he is, really. He also tricked another woman into getting gang raped by the rat people, almost he was coerced into that. He also gets a guy brutally and forcibly raped half to death by a hambeast by tricking the guy into thinking he was going to sleep with a sexy woman. He also got a whole bunch of religious pilgrims killed…I don’t if any of them were any better than he was, except for Garstang whom Cugel does try to defend instead of fleeing, which is an usual act on his part, perhaps because he recognizes Garstang is the rare non piece of shit >>24817472He is a piece of shit but almost everyone he encounters is as well and the tone is much better.
>>24817467spbp
>>24817481>>24817499Sounds based
>>24817909He’s actually more of a buffoon but he’s so narcissistic he is intentionally oblivious to his fuckups. Shitty things continue to happen to him to prevent him from gaining by any of his schemes, often due to being screwed by someone who is better at treachery than he is
>>24817956I wouldn't say he's a buffoon, Cugel is a quick thinker that is great with words. He's just not as gifted as he thinks he is.
>>24816790He's one of the biggest assholes I've ever encountered in a book. Great books.
>>24816790Because Cugel is unburdened by morality and they resent that.Redditors are nihilist fags who pretend to be unburdened by morality, but are the most overbearing moralists you'll ever interact with. They will go on rants about how "XYZ" moral belief is stupid and a delusion, but they'd never be brave enough to actually rape or kill anyone. It is no different than a guy who hates gymbros because he is too much of a lazy slob to get in shape.
>>24818171>>24817956Cugel is a stirnerian character aka based retard. He's not malicious like Iucounu, he simply puts himself first in every situation.
>>24818171This
>>24816790I like him, but I hate him too hes a complete unapologetic asshole and that's great!I especially like the adventure in the desert where he actually DOES form a meaningful relationship with the one pilgram that survives with him and he fucking dies and it mortifies Cugel. Really gives him a sense of humanity. he is 100% a self serving asshole, but he is a Human asshole.
>>24816790Because muh imaginary women
>>24816790This has been on my “to read” list for years. But that list is hundreds of books long and growing so I’ve never gotten around to it. Any anon want to convince me to move it to the top of the list?
>>24819633Eyes of the Overworld and Cugel's Saga are better than any of the Flashman books, besides the Lynonesse books they are probably Vance's best work, and it was these two books that opened the door to Scifi and Fantasy as series literature in the United States.
>>24819633Its really good if you like weird wordage and Alien imagination.I do have to say Eyes of the overworld is overall better, but I do have a soft port for the original collection of short stories of the Dying earth. They are rough and janky, especially the diologue, but have a beautyful sense of exploring a strange imaginative new world that seems to have its own unknowable logic that I have never quite seen since.
>>24819723*as serious literaturetime to jump off a bridge
>>24819633Read the first three pages or the eyes of the overworld and that will convince you. Cudgel’s Saga is also excellent. Both books are heavily influenced by Gulliver’s Travels and Homer (even lifting the names of places directly from his epics).
>>24819739My dad was an English teacher and passionate about English literature but Jack Vance remained one of his favorite prose stylists
Bump. Should I start with picrel? Also why is a new copy $45 Canuckbux???
>>24820775Tales from the Dying Earth is an anthology with it and cheaper. The reason the copy you’re looking at is expensive is because it’s an older edition.
>>24816790I really really hate short stories collections, or as they say in SF, fixup novel.
>>24820953It was originally published as a serial and has a distinct arc
>>24818079He is partially buffoon. He is one part Jack Sparrow, one part Ash from the Evil Dead, one part Mr Bean, and no part ethics.
>>24820953I always liked short stories. I feel like they tend to do justice to a premise better and in a more efficient way before moving on to the next one.
They suspect that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t draw the line when it comes to racism.
>>24820933This is the edition I was talking about. I don't know why my second post with the image didn't go through.
>>24822000A brilliant synthesis
>>24819633Go read Eyes of the Overworld and get past the part where he gets the eyes (its near the beginning) if you aren't already obsessed with Cugel you can stop reading.
I liked the first short story all about the scientist guy trying to create the perfect GF through science.
>>24823154I would just get it used, m8. No idea why it’s so expensive in Canada but for a softcover it is pretty durable
