Shevchenko's poetry is also alright.If you care about Russian literature and culture then Gogol's early works, especially Taras Bulba were particularly influential in how the region was perceived although I think his later more "Russian" stuff is overall better. Isaac Babel is quite underrated, but I'd really recommend his Red Cavalry and Odessa Stories. I can't say anything about the quality of the translations for any of these books.
