Don't care, he's still a genius. I would place Whitman over Poe as America's National Poet if only because Poe's aesthetic is for the most part very European in its sensibilities, but Poe is still a close second, tied with Dickinson.

I was reading Dickinson's poems (one of those most famous popular editions of her Complete Poems, which, iirc, is organized chronologically) and I couldn't understand most of them. I think I read the first 60 or so. When does it get good, I'm afraid to read the rest and find they're about the same.

Keep reading and rereading. Look up analyses online if you have to. Dickinson's poems are notoriously cryptic but once you understand them they are among the most rewarding verse you'll ever read.
