It's prevented me from writing a full length story for the longest time, because I think I always think that I'll regret not doing something, and having to rewrite the entire story just to work it back in.

>>24827470Try outlining your story from beginning to end, or write a wikipedia style plot synopsis. If you have five ideas, write out all five, then see which one you feel like turning into a full-length novel first. But what will likely happen is that you'll realize most of your scene ideas are just that - scenes - without any character, plot, or even context to support them. So you'll end up with two or three full length synopses at best.

Humble yourself and drop your perfectionism. Give yourself permission to suck for the first few drafts. Just write, and finish something. Stop getting hung up on “what if it couldve been better if I took a different approach.” Just write it.
This is when you look for one of those prescriptivist formulas for creating a story. Not because you actually believe it's "the way" but because you need some structure to bridge the gap. It doesn't matter which one--it will be bad regardless, but worth the exercise in training your intuition for how stories are put together. I'd recommend Techniques of the Selling Writer.
