Can someone help me with my indecisiveness over writing?>Have a bunch of ideas, OCs, and several scenes playing out in my head for what I want the story to beEvery time I try writing something down, I always start thinking:>Hey, this would actually be cooler to do, so you'll have to rewrite everything>Hey you should have done this in this story rather than this, so you'll have to redo it>Instead of this, you should have done this, because this actually would be cooler and fit betterAnd so on and so forth. It's prevented me from writing a full length story for the longest time, because I think I always think that I'll regret not doing something, and having to rewrite the entire story just to work it back in.
Have you tried drinking while writing?
>>24827473I don't drink.
>>24827474You could try.
>>24827470>TAD-ack!
>>24827475I am on stimulants though.
>>24827478They don't seem to be helping in this endeavor, it's time to make a change.
>>24827481I tried upping my dosage, but it pretty quickly resulted in my not being able to sleep and feeling shitty after a few days despite being able to focus for the first day or so. I've been working out more though, but even then, I still can't get myself to write down anything.
>>24827484I meant a change the other way, obviously.
>>24827486And in case you think I just "Don't like writing" I've been roleplaying for years and have been doing it all week.
>>24827489Talking to you is tiresome, but I still wish you the best. Good luck!
>>24827470Try outlining your story from beginning to end, or write a wikipedia style plot synopsis. If you have five ideas, write out all five, then see which one you feel like turning into a full-length novel first. But what will likely happen is that you'll realize most of your scene ideas are just that - scenes - without any character, plot, or even context to support them. So you'll end up with two or three full length synopses at best.
>>24827492What should I do if I think of something cooler or better after writing the synopsis?
Humble yourself and drop your perfectionism. Give yourself permission to suck for the first few drafts. Just write, and finish something. Stop getting hung up on “what if it couldve been better if I took a different approach.” Just write it.
This is when you look for one of those prescriptivist formulas for creating a story. Not because you actually believe it's "the way" but because you need some structure to bridge the gap. It doesn't matter which one--it will be bad regardless, but worth the exercise in training your intuition for how stories are put together. I'd recommend Techniques of the Selling Writer.
>>24827507Then write out that synopsis and see if it’s actually cooler. Spoiler: it’s not. Your brain is just finding an excuse to procrastinate. You can always give yourself a deadline, like one week to write a synopsis + outline + detailed character sheet, and whatever you end up with, that’s what you have to commit to.
>>24827470Don't edit. Don't even read what you wrote yesterday when you sit down to write today. I'm serious.
>>24827478Join them. The combination of alcohol and prescription medication has historically been the primary engine of the best busy scribblers.
FUCK OFF HOWIE KYS
>>24827519Okay, I'll try it.
