On first reading, do you consciously try to look for symbolism or just enjoy the story?
>>24828840i try to understand how the story is working. i don't look for symbolism unless i think symbolism is one of the ways in which the story is working.
>>24828840I try to look for image repetition, yea.
>>24828840I try to engorge enough information to sustain my enjoyment, that may veer into symbolism or subtext or linguistic prowess.
>>24828918And I mean engorge it within the text, I don't read secondary material on novels, plays or poems.
There's symbolism in Homer??Sheeiiitt
>>24828840I don't look for anything. Last novel I read was Moby Dick and most authors, especially seppos, just cram it down your throat. I think a good work you shouldn't have to look but you'll notice it on reflection and they don't scream it like Melville etc
