Where should a westerner looking to follow the tenets of Confucianism start? Should I just dive right in and read the Analects?

You wouldn’t understand if you started from there. Begin with Introduction to Classical Chinese Philosophy by van Norden. Then Readings in Classical Chinese Philosophy by the same guy.

nta but the raw text presupposes a certain kind of reader, and since you're most likely not chinese and living in 500BC there's large amounts of context you'd be missing that a secondary text can provide

Yeah. Then afterwards go for Mencius and then Xunzi.
Philip Ivanhoe wrote some neat scholarly material if you're still keen to go deeper.
Or you can just continue with neoconfucianism
