A wonderful work if you enjoy Kerouac, maybe not the first work I would recommend for him but it exhibits why people were interested in him. A life lived in a sordid manner in a brilliant way. People abandoned social mores to pursue his chemical mysticism. If you want to do a fun experiment, at a certain point the character of Tristessa heads to Desolation Peak. At that point I like to suggest reading Desolation Angels to simulate his aimless abandon before going back and finishing Tristessa. That of course is a novel way to read it, but one that I think gave me some insight into the character.
