Pretty sure Nabokov said all those things about this work as a piss-take. The Double is one of his worst works, absolutely miserable prose.

it's "chalk it up to".
chocks exist, as in chocking a truck on a hill by placing a brick or piece of wood behind the tyre, but the colloquialism here uses chalk. as if there were a blackboard where the score is kept.
