People who like pessimistic or dark literature (Mainlander, Hardy, Cioran, Pessoa, Beckett, Michelstadter, Bernahrd, McCarthy etc) are all LARPers. If your life is actually shit and you actually suffer from severe mental illness, you don't like reading that crap because your life is already bad enough. You'd be trying to ESCAPE the constant mental pain, not pursuing as some kind of aesthetic. That's how I know half the people on this board are LARPing faggots. If you actually feel like shit, you may WRITE pessimistic literature, but never read it.

I read it so I can relish in the fact how good my life is
>>
>>24837034
During bad episodes, I cannot read at all. Other than that, it depends on my current headspace, but I do generally like pessimistic literature.

I watches the initial 5 minutes, I'm a big play guy, from what I've gathered they're about the staging, performance and dialogue, the final of three is the /lit/ component. If so, why is Beckett completely bereft of style? Might as well play banjos.

it's self-evident. and yes, saying this means you are devoid of the common powers of observation requisite to appreciate this fact. and yes, it is a fact.

I accept your concession.

you made a claim and refused to substantiate it. the fact that beckett is a depressing author is obvious to everyone. you are the one positing a theory that he was actually joking the whole time. By Occam's razor, my position is preferable. I concede nothing.

It can go either way. Sometimes you wanna wallow or drown in it, sometimes you want a rope so you can swim to a shore. Just because you do a certain thing to cope doesn't mean it's universal. Not to mention just because you like certain themes doesn't mean you live that way. You think that would be obvious, but nowadays people tie every little thing they do to their own identity or a nice little box they can fit strangers into if they happen to like something so it doesn't surprise me you would say something so ignorant.

>People who like pessimistic or dark literature
I have recently been reading books about revolutions, madness born of dissatisfaction, and unalterable destinies.
I feel like my soul has been shattered by the amount of violence, rape, torture, and indifference described.
I understand the purpose of these books: to denounce the atrocity of these wars or to try to portray them accurately based on the authors' personal experiences, but damn!
>>
>>24837034
You can only try so many times before defeat permanently embraces you. Suffering in literature is like something seeing your soul and not looking away.
>>
>>24837034
This doesn't really make sense. Most people read about things to understand them better or because they relate to it. It makes perfect sense for someone who is depressed, suicidal, or otherwise mentally ill to read about those things if not to better understand them then because it is the only thing they can relate to.
By your logic people should only be reading things that represent the exact opposite of their own identity but I think reality does not remotely bear that out.
This is the equivalent of saying every guy that doesn't go around kissing men must be a closet homosexual. In reality most people just do exactly what is predictable for them based on who they are.
