Based OP. Trakl is criminally underrated.

I read all of his early poems (in German) and I am unable to appreciate them. They all rely on the same formula: I feel like it's just "this happens/and there's this/and also this/in other news" and it gets repetetive really fast. I only like the poems which differ from this (Verfall is amazing) but most of it is meh in my opinion.
But I'm willing to change my mind of course

Very valid but that's whole Trakl. I don't care about formal structures. What I find fascinating in Trakl is his imagery and the way he creates his own strange world with it like a mad prophet. Most of it is impenetrable but who cares? I like the way his poems make me feel.

What did Heidegger see in him?

Don't care about a philosopher's babbling.

For me it’s Sebastian im Traum

I'm not a german speaker but I tried translating Grodek word by word just for fun.

One observation

>Alle Straßen münden in schwarze Verwesung.
Strassen is commonly translated as "street" but it also has some uses (according to online dictionaries) as "strait" (nautical term).
Münden's primary use is "to flow into".

Meanwhile, virtually every translation is a variation of
>All roads lead to black decay.
I know Grodek is a landlocked location, so historically all Grodek translations use the term "street" or "road", but using a historical fact as a justification for a poem that's clearly written under a delirious and cocaine-induced psychotic state seems so fucking retarded.

Thoughts?

Also, I haven't thought that much about Trakl's use of colors other than blue and golden being repeating motifs on his work (perhaps to illustrate the contrast between before and after twillight?).

Now that the dust has settled, did he really want to fuck his sister?
>>

He almost certainly wanted to and there's a very good chance he did, though I don't know enough about their relationship to say whether or not it would have even been consensual.

such a lucky bastard

the twilight and autumnal forests are his most common motifs

The translations capture the original German version. While it's correct that muendens primarily use is about rivers, it is also commonly used metaphorically like in your translation

Which English translation do you think are the best?
Personally Daniel Simko's translation speaks to me but I am an ESL and don't know German
