How do you decide when to write short or long sentences?
>>24843503Start with a blank notebook. Scatter full stops at random over the pages. Now just fill up the gaps between them with words.Where the gaps are small you'll have short sentences. Where the gaps are large you'll have long sentences. If your scattering runs out entirely a few pages before the end of the notebook you'll have Ulysses.
>>24843503Use your sense of rhythm.
>>24843503>how do you write? You write, you build, you construct in the way that feels best. Wtf do you mean, 'how do you write".
>>24843530That's actually a great ideia for a short story or a avant garde chapter
>>24843661I was slightly adapting a joke that Robert Benchley used to make. When people asked him "how do you write funny stories?" he said, "I wriite a few random words scattered across a page and then fill up the gaps".It might be an interesting exercise. Give a class of Creative Writing students the same page and see what different stories they come up with.Another similar idea:* Find a book you haven't read where the chapters have titles* Write down the chapter titles in order* Write another book, using those chapter titles* See how similar your book is to the original book
>>24843503create an amazing character and have their personality dictate what you do as a writer.
>>24843503It's better to focus on the content of the sentences -- the words choices, contrast and juxtaposition, conflict -- rather than the structure.
