What happened to book covers?

Talented artists are making furry and anime porn instead.

Pick one.

the people who would appreciate tasteful & artistic covers are mainly the people who engage in online discussions about books and buy books based on recommendations & quality writing, i.e. the cover does not matter to them.
publishers realized this and now all covers are designed to appeal to the sub-median iq consumers who pick random shit to buy off a bookstore shelf based only on the cover art.

the publishing industry happened.

Give it a few years and they'll adopt AI generated art too. Give it a few more years and every book cover will have a söy face like a youtube thumbnail.

I'll never get over how they managed to be less creative than 'random internet names your debut album', where:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first article is the name of your band
http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php
The last three or four words of the last quote on the page is the album title
http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
Third picture is the album cover

I decided to do it on a whim and got Stone Moroko - A Plumber on Weekends, with this gem of a photo
Certainly more memorable than those copy-paste covers

Many artists and designers today are total hacks and modern conveniences have only made it worse. In a weird way I kinda like the new cover in a digital art kind of way. Its fine and I'm sure over time people might even grow to like it

Kek, zoomers are braindead brownoids.
The publishing industry has existed for two centuries at least. During the 20th century book covers were much better than the slop that passes for today's professional "art". It was leftism that destroyed art's quality standards and made it subjective (except when it wasn't) .

Publishers don't know what art is.

I actually design book covers for a living, at this point in my life at least.

I’ve had designs shut down before on several occasions because “the audience wouldn’t get it”. I wish this was a metaphor or me being overzealous with my vision, but I’m not that smart.

This is “I don’t think people would understand why we have Beethoven on the cover of A Clockwork Orange” levels I’m talking about.

The publisher I work for knows the audience is dumb (their words) or is breastfed with BookTok bullshit, and instead of trying to change that because hey, we’re talking about fucking books, they study common elements, gradings, fonts etc and ask us to replicate the designs. Reminds me of Pavlov now that I think about it.

Not only that, but the authors themselves seem to pick up on this. Look up Claire Douglas. That bitch should have been a fucking realtor instead of writing thriller tripe. Instead of going for quality, they settle on having a house, or some other “signature” element in the cover, (like that other one with the Maid series, Freida whats-her-face, whose covers have keyholes iirc), so that people would perk up when they see the cover.

Check how many whodunits have teal and orange palettes. Check how many classics get republished with some stale, vectorized symbol against a flat, one-color background (think a broken vase for The Idiot). Check how many self-scam books have HUGE WORDS ON THE COVER, with next to no visuals, so the consumer can register in the span of a second. It’s all assembled and much less crafted.

It’s a fucking sad state of affairs but as far as I and I alone am concerned, so’s an empty fridge. You do what you gotta do until something better pops up.

> Give it a few years and they'll adopt AI generated art too

Don’t. It’s already here. But they know they’ll get shit on if they admit it. So most of them keep it on the QT.
