Always been the case. Maybe things were better, but back in the 80s and 90s, people were just reading Michael Crichton and Danielle Steele instead of Bradon Sanderson and ACOTAR. More people were reading since they couldn't scroll phones yet, but it's not like it was a literary enlightenment epoch.
