You would want to have the Laura Ingalls Wilder books under your belt by twelve but maybe it's not too late.

Moomintroll likewise.
Roald Dahl likewise.

Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a great one-off.

Island of the Blue Dolphin is OK.

Age-wise she should be ready for Alice in Wonderland, Wind in the Willows, Watership Down now. (All that modern stuff might have spoiled her palette but we can hope not. )

The Hobbit is way too childish for a twelve year old and Fellowship starts off in a very child friendly manner. Having her read one book per year (starting with Fellowship) wouldn't overload her with information and she'd mature along with the characters.

My favourite childhood novels (11/12 yo) were the Name of the Rose and the Dark Tower series. Read that shit like thrice.

Parsifal's Page by Gerald Morris. It's a YA retelling of the Arthurian Parzival story by Eschenbach and many others. Fucking loved that book when I was a kid and the Eschenbach version is much much better.

If she liked those then the hobbit and then LOTR are certainly in her wheelhouse. Do not get an Omni of the lord of the rings get single editions for each so it isn’t daunting.

Frindle

The redwall series

The secret of platform 13

Crossley-Holland’s The Arthur Trilogy
