Basically all of the modern era philosophers were into the esoteric, including Gnosticism. Which is only like one step away from being basically satanism. Paul Kingsnorth is the living meme of the guy at the party who’s mad at everyone having a good time and that all the hot chicks are not bagging him because he’s smart and sees through the bullshit, maaaaaaaaan. Like all weirdo environmental activists. Honestly, he’s good at first. You start agreeing with him and his metaphors are generally on point and he has a poetic sense for nostalgia and romanticism of the past. And you like it and think of your own experiences and you start to think, “hmm, yeah I probably should get out in nature more and relax a bit.” And then, as they all do, he starts getting a little too aggressive like, “oh well you at least have to admit Marx was kinda brilliant” and it suddenly morphs into, “oh there I was in a fishing village on vacation and I suddenly realized everyone else here on vacation is a bunch of fucking slaves! Drinking their beer and enjoying chocolate! But not me man! I’m not a slave because I see the bullshit man. They didn’t even grow their own hops, man!” And by the end of it he thinks the west should basically commit civilizational suicide and everyone should join his cult commune in Kent where he will ostensibly be cult leader and have his concubines frolick around the fields sucking his dick. I think at the beginning he even says like, “oh I used to be an environmental activist but I’m not anymore…” and there are at least twenty moments in the book where I paused to reread it because he sounds like a deranged fucking environmentalist lunatic.
