I wrote for ten years, didn't get published until five years ago, and then I've only had middling success with five stories, a dozen poems, and essays. I just use it to get a foot in the door with some jobs. Other than that, it's been a massive time sink. I might give up soon because I've painted myself into a corner.

Cool

Of course it's a time sink, that's what makes it valuable in the first place. Maybe it's a matter of personality, but this is why it's best to enjoy writing more than having written.

All that time wasted when you could've been using it to get better at video games. How do you live with yourself?
>>
>>24862227
I could've worked more or studied something that could get me money.

You don’t enjoy what you’re good at. Most people who like writing are bad at it.

i think it's insane to say people who are good writers don't enjoy writing. that's pure meaningless cliche, the pop-culture image of the tormented artist compelled by stern muses beyond their control. perhaps the activity doesn't keep them passively entertained, but to make good art is the closest thing we have to meaningful unalienated labour. you're activating all the faculties that otherwise lie dormant. you're creating something worth being conscious of. read a single henry james preface and tell me he doesn't enjoy writing more than anything in the world. wyndham lewis talks about painters as creating in their paintings the ecosystem in which their idiosyncratic personal organism can best thrive. that's what good writers do too, or at least it seems to me a truer description of artistic creation than a tormented spilling of blood on the page. maybe you just have a very impoverished definition of enjoyment.

you should've given up ten years ago if you weren't writing out of love of the game.

I have anhedonia, so I do have impoverished enjoyment. Devil take it.

Where's that screenshot from?

>five stories, a dozen poems, and essays.
att his point, you have to write a novel. what's holding you back?
>>
>>24863421
I have paranoid schizophrenia and find it impossible to write long form prose, probably due to thought disorder or language disorder.

>got published
So you won. Stop bitching, fag.

The point is to respond to the masters that came before you and be remembered for eternity.
>>
>>24863609
Guess you will have to stick to short stories then. Have you tried to get a book deal for a collection?

this is a good post by the same person: http://harmonyzone.org/blog/posts/consequence/

The only thing worse than mediocrity being published is the vast hoard of equally mediocre writers all crying about how they didn't get published.

it's good, thanks for linking it.

no, what i don't enjoy is having to compromise to create something that can be marketed to others. writing just for myself is always pleasant. like anon already said above, the tormented writer is a capitalist creation. it's easier to sell something when a lot of sweat and blood went into it.
