>You cannot be both a good parent and a good writer.
Is it true that having children nukes any chance you have of achieving greatness? Is the tradeoff worth it?

No, Tolstoy had kids. Idk how good a dad he was though. Tolkien seems like he was a good dad--he did well enough that his son devoted his life to looking after his father's estate. The skill sets for writing and parenting only really overlap in a strong grasp of character, so it's rare to excel at both. For some people being good at one will require forgoing the other to have the requisite time to invest.
Whether it's worth it is subjective. I write (slop, but still) and these days it's more important to me than having a family. But maybe I will someday.
Now go knock some girl up and write about it, I guess.

>You cannot be both a good parent and a good writer.
Are you quoting someone?
>>
>>24866652
Doesn't fucking matter does it?

>>24866652
No, that was just to give the statement greater weight.

I believe christopher simply saw the giant pile of money his father was sitting on and correctly assumed that trying his luck with another vocation and job would've been a waste of time and resources.

Marx starved his children to death to write shit and piss. Take from that what you will.

The Winnie the Pooh guy? That was also another case of the father ruining the son's life.

The actual quote was by Yeats.

Bach had twenty children and he's the greatest musician the world will ever see.

Your kids should be your main focus as a parent. It’s extremely hard to raise a kid right without them needing therapy as adults right. Focusing on some other BS is selfish. So, yes, it’s impossible if someone wants to be a parent the right way.

To your last question, nothing is ever worth the squeeze but we do it anyways.

Retarded helicopter parent nonsense.

John Rockefeller Sr. had a loving wife and five children, and he was great. In addition, he said that his wife's advices were wise, and without it he would not have achieved the greatness he achieved.

You are not going to be a famous or successful writer. I do not say this on the presumption that you lack talent. I say this because the entire publication industry, as well as academia and review literature, have been wholesale corrupted by various cultural trends, leading to a situation in which great ability causes one to be less likely to succeed, while fashionable hacks go "viral" to a stunted reading audience.

Nothing in life will cause you to be more miserable than being alone. Even if you are successful, being alone will ruin whatever small joys come as a result.

On the other hand you can be totally mediocre in some career at a bank or teaching high school, and so long as you come home to a wife and children who love you, you will find life is full of meaning and joy and infinite little challenges that fulfill all of your male instincts to guide and provide.

Do not make this mistake OP, please, you will deprive yourself of life's joys to soothe an ego, like some sort of stupid woman chasing a career.

Are you fucking kidding me? Tolstoy? That guy had 13 children and neglected each one of them. In fact 5 of them died of neglect, you dense motherfucker. The fucking guy decided to go die alone, away from his family instead of spending his last days alongside them.
Yes, you can't be a good writer and a good father. Just search the amount of writers children that have committed suicide or have been committed to the loony bin later in life.

Christ. How many wives did he have?

It kind of sounds like the Death of Ivan Ilyich "Leave me in peace! Just leave me alone, bitch!"
>>

>John Rockefeller Sr.
And what wonderful novel was he responsible for writing?
>>
>>24866643
>No, Tolstoy had kids.
You think he interacted with them? In those times you could just ignore your wife with no threat of divorce, and if she complained, you could send her off to an asylum. I'm sure he hired nanny-servants too.

The real question is:
>Does having children (WHILE POOR) kill your changes of being a great writer?
and the answer is yes.
