You have to sort of read between lines because in the midst of all the ideology there's often plenty of empirical insights that the author is clearly embarrassed by. Oscar Lewis is the classic example. His colleagues raked him over the coals for accurately reporting his observations of poor people in India, Mexico, and P.R. acting like contemptible fools. Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed also comes to mind. Promises I Can Keep and Doing the Best I Can are a pair of works on American single moms and dads respectively. William Julius Wilson's When Work Disappears I hear is also good.
