I got this Iliad from barnes and noble but I didnt do any research into the translation. Its by EV Rieu and seems to be a prose translation. I read a bit of other translations and Fagles seems good, Lattimore seems kinda annoying, lots of people recommend Emily Wilson but I’m skeptical of a woman translator. Does /lit/ have a definitive version?

tldr: should I return this EV Rieu translation and get a Fagles translation?

Rieu is okay, from what I remember. Simplifies somewhat, but fine enough. Lattimore is the one with the reputation for being "literal," but that's only half-true, he's translating with metre in mind, but he's about as accurate as you'll find of the translators working with a poetic form. Fagles tends to make it into an action movie, Wilson makes it read like an Instagram poem, they both take liberties and whether they're good depends on what your stomach can handle. I think the newer Caroline Alexander is pretty good, personally, maybe glance at that.

Pope's.

If you're looking for a literal translation dont forget about The Illiad. Intralineal translation. Composed by Hamilton, Locke and Clark. Intra linear translations are good for that. Because you can clearly see what word is being used for every Greek word or sometimes words and vice versa.
