What's this book about?

it's like if a 19th-century-style doorstopper novel set in russia was also science fiction. the tunguska event brought extraterrestrial frost-based life to earth (think more solaris than star trek) and ww1 never happened. a young degenerate gambler travels across the russian empire to siberia looking for his political exile father who has supposedly figured out how to communicate with the frost lifeforms, which is of interest to various political factions. a dense, elaborate book.
