I just finished Red Country I am enjoying the series.

I don’t trust GRRM recommendations anymore. I bought a sci fi book on his good word and it was really shitty. I forget the name of it, but a GRRM recommendation is a red flag for me now.

Say one thing for Logen Ninefingers. Say he's back to the mud.

Abysmal slop. Grime coated dreck with teenage cynicism layered over every subject and the most dishonest and schizophrenic portrayal of the passage of time possible. We begin in the medieval period and fly straight into the industrialization of Europe in less than one full generation, everyone's attitudes are strictly deranged. There is not the faintest hint of earnesty in any of it, it seethes modernity from every pore. We don't learn anything in this story, we don't get any indication towards the good and the true, just pointless shitcolored violence and nihilistic affirmations.

Complete waste of time. Even Bakker is less nihilistic.

It's entertaining but it goes nowhere. There's a bunch of setups in the background ala GRRM with no payoff.

Then as this guy says the next trilogy he just does The French Revolution fantasy edition. Glokta's story is also entertaining and full of intrigue - we can compare directly with ASOIAF at its best again, but the entire thing has very little consequence for the world. It's like we zoomed in on the Lannisters and their court drama for the most part with uprisings across their holdings as the A-plot. Nothing really moves the big wheel he keeps hinting at.

If we compare with LOTR all of these modern writers are just abysmal. In twice the number of pages they don't even tell the equivalent to Fellowship or the Ringbearer journey - and fucking forget about all the rest, they don't really try.

Either;
1) Zoom the fuck down and tell the specific story of someone like Glokta or Logen's journey (would probably read more like Conan if done right).
2) Fucking figure out what the Grand Narrative (tm) is before you start writing you retarded cunts.

And this eternal "just one more trilogy bro I promise just another 2000 pages bro it'll pay off I swear I just need more books" mentality is insane. It's not like there aren't swaths of genre lit that only exist to sell the next book but at least they have the fucking decency to tell a complete story in the detective genre or horror genre, or the romance genre for that matter. Lawyer books or cop books. Noir. They all knew that they had to tell a good story to get the punter to try the next one. Fantasy has circumvented this entirely to sell set dressing for something that never happens, and keep promising it's gonna happen at some point.
