Why isn't this great book discussed more on /lit/? It is "literally me" the novel.
>>
its an interesting book. maybe people dismiss it as just another eerie supernatural tale. but its more than that. The way it deals with disconnection from reality, loss of self identity and loneliness can hit hard.

Man, was it in this one where there was a scene of a group of boys stringing up a kitten (or puppy)? Real sad stuff

it's legitimately one of my favorites and it far surpasses mere genre fiction

yeah a puppy dog and since the book is half autobiography theres a good chance that happened in real life
>>
Is this like how Blackwood's one full length novel is the best thing he ever wrote and the synthesis of the worldview underlying all his spooky short stories
>>
>>24888487
I haven't read that one (you're talking about the centaur, right). Is it any good? i'm a fan of his short stories.
And yeah it's the perfect encapsulation of Machen's worldview-of there being a secret world behind our ordinary one that is at once seductive and repellant-in his case the hills and forests of his native wales.

Is that a tear in the veil of reality?! Save me niggeman!
>>
So was Annie a witch or not?

I think it was meant to be ambigous. But maybe lucian's entire mystical experienc and his death were orchestrated by annie as some kind of ritualistic sacrifice.

Is it anywhere as good as Knut Hamsun's book? If so, I may give it a try. Never heard of it before
>>

not op, but yes, it's really good. too good for /lit/, surely
>>
Why is this out of print? The editions I can find on amazon are all crappy print on demand shit and the ones that are by real publishers are from like the 1970s and more than 50 pounds a piece.

buy the 50 pound one

This one doesn't look too bad

the bit when he goes back to (or at least imagine he goes back to) the decadence of romano british wales is one of the best parts of the novel
