What do we think of Olga Tokarczuk? Is she really one of the best writers of our generation?

I just bought the Fitzcarraldo paperback of The Books of Jacob.So when I get through all nine hundred pages of it, I'll tell you if it's good. This thread will still be up by then of course.

I'm convinced that the critics who described it as causing controversy in Poland were just straight up lying - there isn't a people on the planet humourless enough to be so affected by something so unexceptional and bland.
i liked both drive your plow over the bones of the dead and books of jacob, although the latter dragged on. i plan to read the empusium as well.

I read Drive Your Plow and did not like it. It was competently put together but deeply conventional and uninteresting with a lame feminist angle to boot. I'll give Flights a chance at some point.

She's far too establishmentcore for my tastes. Any living author that you can imagine getting a fluff piece in the liberal establishment's media is almost certainly not an author that is worth your time, because if they had any merit, then they would be scorned by the mainstream, not given constant handjobs by journos.

She's actually quite interesting because despite her adoption of all the current thing-isms (feminist, leftist, vegetarian, self-hating Pole because muh colonisation), her writing is actually pretty good.I'd say the best approach would be to treat her like J.K. Rowling. Take from her writing what you wish and ignore all the gay political stuff going on in her personal life.
