My only Garnett experience is The Brothers Karamazov, which came off very stuffy and flat, but I haven't read any other translations so I don't know if that's just the book itself.

They are extremely literal. I speak Russian (but not enough to read Dosto in the original) and there are times where I can "see" the original language through the translation.

For some people this is great. For others it sucks ass. I personally don't mind them.
