Critical thinking = the trivium

There are tons of books, here are some.

forallx.openlogicproject.org

Also, I agree that Euclid is good. >>24904045

For Euclid I recommend:

But forget the questions at the top left of the image, that's not critical thinking.

Those questions look like critical thinking applied to media: the kind of questions you ask when watching a movie or reading a newspaper. If not C. T., how would you call it? "Media literacy" questions?

I only looked at two of the books in that image, the top two, they looked good as far as I remember. I didn't make the image. I'd go with forallx.openlogicproject.org, solid option. This also seems good:

Those questions are the fake "critical thinking" they tell you about in high school. It's just bullshit. It has nothing to do with actual critical thinking, which is the trivium: grammar, logic and rhetoric, which has been suppressed for the masses since the Prussian education system was implemented.

20th century cultural theorists like Stuart Hall or the Fields sisters would be a good start. Work your way down to the people and ideas they reference.

Starting from the bottom up may lead to some anachronistic readings and confusion.

>Critical thinking = the trivium
This is the base, but it's worth following up with more recent, concrete and relevant examples. The "grammar" side of the trivium carries an awful lot of weight in that respect, essentially encompassing all the foundations of observational empiricism and wrapping it up under the heading of linguistics.
>>24904043
Plato and Aristotle are great but it can be useful to read accessible and of people actually applying critical thinking to real-world issues. The Federalist Papers are a good example.

Simply reading will not do anything to help get that hamster wheel spinning. You need to solve problems. Try to learn about different things that interest you. A book on "how to think" will be meaningless if you never attempt to do any thinking.

If you're interested in philosophy, start with Plato's Republic. Watch lectures as well if you are new.
>>
>>24904043
Just use that voice in your mind, body and soul that questions when you read. Keep that voice going. Do that often. They'll call you an annoying bastard in no time, but at least you'll be able to think for yourself.

This is what we were brainwashed to think "critical thinking" is. It's not. It's something you have to be taught. That's the cornerstone of a classical education. The elite still get it, we don't. That's what the Prussian education system is all about, suppressing critical thinking skills (the Trivium) for the bottom 99.5% of the population, while teaching it to the top 0.5%. People have many different false ideas about what critical thinking is. Critical thinking is the Trivium.
